When Yelizaveta Uvarova becomes a mayor of a small town, she puts her heart and soul into building a bridge there. Yet soon politics will have to make way for her family life as her son suddenly dies.

Quote:
The title is a Russian expression meaning “I wish to speak”. This is one of my three favorite Panfilov films which I consider masterpieces, the other two being “Nachalo” and “Tema”; Panfilov wrote this script by himself it seems. It shows, this film is genius. For me, this is honestly one of the most thought-provoking films of my life. Perfectly written. It is about a family woman who was made the mayor of a town. I am mystified by this film. Not since Tarkovsky have I felt this strange spiritual energy, and that’s saying something. This is the last Panfilov film I saw, I’ve seen five others. The incredible world of the characters is what reminds me of a Tarkovsky movie. This movie is about a family. It could be said to be about a lot of things. But to me this film is about communism. I can’t have enough room to write and express all the incredible thoughts and scenes contained in this movie, nor would I want to. But I must say how realistic and natural the script and acting are and how poetic and beautiful yet simple the cinematography is. This films is about the ideals and morals of communism that any human being with a conscience can relate to: want for peace all over the world, a sense of duty to make the world better, love of your country and respect for all men and women. This mayor is still an attractive young woman, but she is stern when she needs to be and she can be rude and takes her job very seriously. But she also spends a lot of time with her family, she was a champion marksman, her husband is a soccer coach, they have two kids, son and daughter. This film uses some real Beatles songs, “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” for instance is played almost in it’s entirety in the first 10 minutes, which I still find to be 10 of some the most incredible minutes in film ever, just incredible poetry. This film is definitely not for everyone, but it is a very good film, with an even more important message. It reminds me of an Oliviera film, because of long talking scenes. This film is definitely a nostalgic piece now that communism ended, especially because that is specifically it’s topic. Also it paints a very realistic picture of what the feel under communism was for most working normal people, and it wasn’t fear but togetherness. If you want a film that isn’t propaganda and is very human and shows what a normal individual who is a communist “sees” in it, definitely watch this film, it is the one and only to treat the topic so respectfully and truthfully, the only other one is “U Ozera”, IMO. The story is fiction but the ideas are absolutely true, in the end it doesn’t matter what the directors/writers stance on anything was, he understood his subject and was inspired by it enough to make this poetic film, and I thank him.

A self-pitying but popular playwright drives to Vladimir to relax with a doting female student and another writer. He’s convinced his writing is of no lasting value, but he still has an ego, about his work and his masculine appeal. He’s drawn to a museum guide he sees on his first afternoon, and when she appears at dinner, he tries charm. She reads widely, knows his work, loved it once and now finds it trivial; and she says so. He’s stung. The next day, they walk through a cemetery where she talks of a dead peasant’s poems and he grabs an idea of hers as the theme for a new play. She remains indifferent; he’s baffled. So that night he spies on her. All is revealed.

Quote:
Gleb Panfilov, one of the Soviet Union’s most innovative directors, wrapped that film, Tema (the theme), in 1979. It had been previously approved and funded by Goskino, the state film agency, but after it went to Goskino for review, months passed with no news. Panfilov and his friends began to press officials for an explanation. “I was never given any comprehensible answer,” says the softspoken director. “Only once did I receive a reasonable reply. One official told me he had watched it twice and thought it was very good, although shocking. ‘Your film is very emotional,’ he said. ‘Therefore we cannot release it. You must wait.’ “

He waited seven years. Then last June Panfilov was summoned to the movie distribution agency. “They said that the film was being released and wanted to discuss what month would be suitable and what kind of advertisements should appear,” he says. “It was as if nothing had happened.”

kinoglaz.fr:

This Russian-French comedy examines the effects of capitalism and democracy upon a Russian peasant village. It was filmed in the rural village of Bezvodnoye, the setting of this film’s 1967 precursor “Asya’s Happiness.” The outspoken peasant woman Asya returns in this new episode which begins with her walking along a road explaining why democracy doesn’t work. Her husband is an alcoholic who lives with a gypsy. Her son works on the black market for the mob. He was part of a theft involving a rare golden egg from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Asya’s opinions seem to be well founded. In the village crime has increased, inflation is rising, and local authorities are ineffectual. Many locals are so angry at the town Capitalist for running his mill 24-hours per day that they stage a demonstration and begin waving pro-Communist banners. Asya’s pet chicken begins to grow and speak.

Quote:
Virtually unknown nowadays, even in its home country of Russia, The Cat Who Walked by Herself is an endearing children’s film directed by Ideya Garanina and produced at the Soyuzmultfilm studio. It is based upon Rudyard Kipling’s short story “The Cat that Walked by Himself,” which was first published in 1902. As far as I’ve been able to tell, the film uses a variety of animation techniques, including puppetry, stop motion and traditional animation, blending it all into an interesting tale of the origin of the civilised human and his millenia-long partnership with several species of domesticated animal. The story is narrated by a seemingly omniscient cat, who reminds a young child of an agreement struck long ago by the Cat and the Woman. The voice of the feline (whom, having absolutely no knowledge of Russian, I have been unable to identify) is a brilliant narrator, her voice at once carrying a sense of quiet arrogance, pride, dignity and everlasting knowledge.

Just as the Cat recounts, there was once a time when every animal was wild. Even Man (voiced by Nogon Shumarov), who was endowed with such slowness that he was a terrible hunter, lived in squalid conditions, always hungry for more food. However, the arrival of Woman (Valentina Ponomaryova) had the effect of civilising the dirty and rather dim male. After finding her husband a nice cave in which to dwell, the cunning Woman hatches a scheme to further improve their lives. By calling upon the almighty elements around her (fire, the Sun, the Moon) with a sort of mystical chant, she entices various animals to attach themselves to mankind in exchange for something they desire. For the dog, it is the leftover bones from dinner; for the horse, it is mouthfuls of delicious hay; for the cow, it is protection from predators. All the while, the quietly calculating cat – “who always walked by herself” – observes from the shadows and declares the foolishness of the animals who are surrendering their freedom.

This film is certainly not a masterpiece, but there are snatches of definite brilliance in many scenes throughout the short 70-minute running time. For example, the sequence detailing the extinction of the elegant quagga, at the hands of merciless human hunters, was heartbreaking to watch. My favourite scene would probably be the one in which the Cat attempts to understand why a cow’s milk is pure white; it is such a wondrous flurry of colours, as the feline plummets through flocks of vibrant birds, butterflies and flowers in search of the possible answer. I much preferred the scenes with the animals rather than the humans, since I’ve never been a huge fan of puppet animation, and these segments seem much more dated than the others. Nevertheless The Cat Who Walked by Herself is an interesting film that I’m glad I watched.
