Tjoet Nja’ Dhien is an epic anti-colonial film about the Aceh war, the long and bloody struggle against the colonial Dutch rule in the sultanate of Aceh in Indonesia. This aesthetically shot film portrays the unique character of the female guerrilla fighter Tjoet Nja’ Dhien. After her husband and rebel leader Teuku Umar is killed in an ambush, she takes on the Dutch colonial army herself and starts leading the numerous guerrilla warriors of Aceh.

The film, often praised for its delicate lighting, covers the period from 1876 to 1906. In 1871, the independence of the Aceh sultanate in northern Sumatra came to an end when the Dutch placed it under colonial rule. Aceans, known for their courageous characters, resisted fiercely, which led to a bloody war that lasted for decades. Teuku Umar, one of the most important resistance leaders, married Tjoet Nja’ Dhien in 1880, who was also part of the resistance movement. When Umar died, she set herself up as the new, charismatic, and fearless leader and remained so for ten years. As her deeds became legendary, she was proclaimed a national heroine in 1964.

On May 20th 2021, the restored version of this captivating film premiered in Jakarta. This restoration was carried out by Eye Filmmuseum and ID FilmCentre in 2017 and 2018, in close collaboration with director Eros Djarot and producer Alwin Abdullah

The banned Indonesian Islamic State (NII) successfully recruits among young people who don’t have any prospects of training or work. Nugroho tells three different stories: that of the girl Rima, who emerges as a valuable staff member of the NII; Jabir, who quits school for lack of money and returns to his parents, and Asimah, the mother of Ainsi, who has been kidnapped by the NII.
Rima does so well that she acquires a leading role, but then it soon becomes apparent that there is no room for her ambitions in Islamic conventions. Jabir joins the radical Muslims out of frustration about the lives of his parents, who have no prospects. Asimah walks all over the city looking for her daughter. Nugroho (Leaf on a Pillow, Opera Jawa) made the film on a small budget (less than 100,000 Euros) with primarily non-professional actors.

Synopsis:
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country and has also the largest Muslim population. For 12 years, filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich has followed an Indonesian family from the slums of Jakarta. Just as in his previous two multiple award-winning documentaries THE EYE OF THE DAY and SHAPE OF THE MOON, in POSITION AMONG THE STARS, he continues to show us the underlying patterns of life in Indonesia. His intimate access to the Indonesian Sjamsuddin family provides viewers a microcosm depicting the most important issues of life in Indonesia today: corruption, conflict between religions, gambling addiction, the generation gap, and the growing difference between poor and rich. The grandmother Rumidjah, a confessed Christian, has left the bustle of Jakarta to live with her friend in the countryside. Her son Bakti, who has converted to Islam, is responsible for raising his juvenile niece Tari. Because he can’t handle Tari, Bakti got his mother back to Jakarta in order to teach her granddaughter about moral and social values. Tari grows up in a time of increasing openness. A time in which people are allowed, and even expected, to express their opinion about everything. Older people grew up in a repressive time they haven’t got used to democracy. The generation gap between young and old like in the Western countries has become a new phenomenon in Indonesia. One does not have to have seen Leonard Retel Helmrich’s previous films to fully enjoy POSITION AMONG THE STARS.
