Film and Director Background
A film adaptation of Seijiro Shimada’s autobiographical best-selling novel of the same name, Part 1: Things Lurking in the Land. Kozaburo Yoshimura directed the screenplay by Kaneto Shindo. The music is by Akira Ifukube.
A literary film with a strong artistic flavor, depicting the first love of a 17-year-old who is so sad and single-minded! The second release in a two-month series of masterpieces directed by the master of tragic love films, Kozaburo Yoshimura. Born in 1911, he made his directorial debut in 1934. In 1947, one of Japan’s most famous films, Anjo Family Ball, won first place in the Kinema Junpo Top Ten. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1976 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 1982.
　　 Released on March 23rd, this film is one of director Kozaburo Yoshimura’s favorites. It is said that he projected the image of his first love onto the heroine played by Hitomi Nozoe.
The original is a big bestseller of the Taisho era “Secachu”. There is also a biography of the author, Seijiro Shimada, as a genius who died young.
　　Hakusan City, where he was born, established the ‘Shimasei Romance Literature Award’ named after Seijiro Shimada. The most recent award was Ira Ishida. She won the Best Supporting Actress Award (Kinuyo Tanaka) at the Mainichi Film Awards.
