Injustices and misdemeanors in agencies like the local police and the National Security Bureau (West Germany’s equivalent of the American FBI) are featured in this highly politicized drama about Brasch, a teacher (Helmut Griem) and Koerner (Martin Benrath), a NSB agent. A polarized society is, at one end, terrified after a public official (Hanns Martin Schleyer) is kidnapped and at the other end, enraged by the mysterious, sudden deaths of members of the Baader-Meinhof leftist guerrillas in prison. Brasch sympathizes with the liberal causes, and after he implicates Koerner and the NSB in some dirty dealings that resulted in the suicide of a young teen, the schoolteacher is fired — and so is Koerner for being caught out. Her mother, a nightclub singer who lived in Germany, France and Argentina, becomes the focus of a series of flashbacks through which we learn of her mother’s stormy life and the difficulty she had in bringing her up. These insights enable Malou to sort out the difficulties in her own life.

Volker Schlöndorff based his film “Die Moral der Ruth Halbfass” on a rather spectacular murder case that involved a rich Düsseldorff industrialist’s wife, Minouche Schubert. The case was the stuff of tabloid newspaper exposés, and to some extent “The Morals of Ruth Halbfass” was a calculated attempt by Schlöndorff to win over a popular audience.

The movie’s central situation smacks of cliché: a wealthy, superficially glamorous couple, united in a loveless marriage, tolerate one another’s joyless extramarital affairs until attempted murder complicates things. On close inspection, however, there is a lot more complexity to “The Morals of Ruth Halbfass” than immediately meets the eye. Schlöndorff uses the movie’s familiar narrative framework as a context in which he makes a number of serious observations about contemporary German life and culture. He also undercuts usual genre expectations by using unsympathetic characters whose comportment always keeps the audience conscious of their place in a larger social system.

The Krupp-like steel magnate Baron von Essenbeck represents the spineless establishment. A bearish, boorish Essenbeck representing the SA, the Nazis’ early goon squad, takes the reins. The winning Essenbeck is the murderous, pedophilic, transvestite, mother-rapist Martin (sharp-featured Helmut Berger), who represents Nazism. The Damned got an Oscar screenplay nomination, and Vincent Canby called Berger’s Martin “the performance of the year.”

The architect Phillip Braun is framed by his former employer Lasky that embezzles the money that should be used to buy suitable material of a construction that collapses, killing a person. Phillip is wrongly imprisoned and for five years his lawyer David Reinalt is not capable to prove that Lasky is the responsible for the accident. When Phillip is released, he meets his beautiful wife Lisa Braun and then his son Timmie. Soon Lasky seeks Philip out to poison the relationship of his wife with David. Lisa is very close to David and Phillip becomes suspicious of their friendship. David finds a job for Phillip with a friend of him and he tells that Lasky is pressing him because he is still trying to prove Phillip’s innocence. Soon Lisa confesses to her husband that she had a brief two-week love affair with David a long time ago when he was in prison, but now they are only friends. Phillips is disturbed with the revelation and his jealous increases while Lisa frequently visits David. One day, Phillip visits David and he tells that he has just saved his life since Lasky was trying to kill him. But Phillip kills David with a statue and cleans his fingerprints. Lasky and Phillip becomes the prime suspect of Police Commissioner Österreicher. However, Lasky had bugged David’s apartment and he blackmails Phillip with an audio tape. What will Phillip do?
