Harry Baer plays a newly released ex-convict who slowly but surely finds his way back into the Munich criminal underworld. Meanwhile, his attentions are torn between two women (Hanna Schygulla and Margarethe von Trotta) and the friend (Günther Kaufmann) who shot his brother. This sensual, artfully composed film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder is a study of romantic and professional futility.

Frost is a landmark European film, cementing Fred Kelemen as an inheritor of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog. This three-hour epic 16mm film focuses on a mother and son fleeing her abusive husband in Berlin and wandering the former East Germany seeking a town that has long since vanished. Set during a sunless Christmas, Frost slowly unfolds during their one-week odyssey across glacial landscapes, towards peace. Introduced by the film critic Jonathan Romney.

One of the boldest German filmmakers of the last 20-years, critic Susan Sontag compared Kelemen’s “urgently relevant” work to Alexander Sokurov and Bela Tarr. He garnered attention for his 1990s trilogy – Fate, Frost and Nightfall. Believing in “time and not in speed”, meditations on human dissolution, cruelty and loneliness unfold at somnambulant pace. Set amongst Europe’s late-capitalist underclass of the unemployed and dispossessed, he captures nocturnal urban low-life with beauty.

This lengthy film (1h:36m:32s) consists mostly of interview footage of Fassbinder’s collaborators with a few select clips from films. There’s also a good analysis of Fassbinder’s visual language here. Although one doesn’t really get a very clear sense of Fassbinder, one notion that does come across is that he was a compulsive filmmaker; unlike the others who fall into that category, such as Jess Franco and Ed Wood, however, his pictures were often very high quality despite low budgets and short shooting schedules.

Life Stories: A Conversation with R.W. Fassbinder
Quote:
Life Stories is a 49-minute interview with Fassbinder, dating from 1978—apparently the longest interview he ever gave. He appears physically bloated and mentally exhausted (he keeps refilling his coffee cup), but responds candidly to questions about his childhood, brief marriage, and filmmaking style.

Quote:
At first inarticulate and reluctant to talk, Fassbinder warms up a bit about 15 minutes in, though the questions become a bit irritatingly abstract and Fassbinder visually seems to be wondering where this discussion is going. One is left with the inevitable comparison to Franz Schubert, madly creating before his impending premature death. The question is unresolved, however, as to whether the creative burst was to accomplish as much as possible prior to an early death, or whether that death was brought on by the frenetic pace of work. Of course, Fassbinder’s chain smoking probably didn’t do his bad heart any good either. Except as noted, everything but the commentaries is in English-subtitled German.

An interview with Fassbinder’s cinematographer Xaver Schwarzenberger.
Quote:
A second interview segment with Xaver Schwarzenberger, cinematographer for Fassbinder’s last five projects (including the last two films of the trilogy) gives some interesting insights into Fassbinder’s shooting process, backed up by behind-the-scenes footage. Fassbinder controlled the framing absolutely, but left the lighting and color filters to his cameraman, which left Schwarzenberger a good deal of room for creativity.

An interview with editor Juliane Lorenz conducted by Fassbinder scholar Laurence Kardish.
Quote:
Another interview with Juliane Lorenz (32m:39s) centers expressly on Fassbinder’s editing style, frequently working without rushes but immediately editing scenes as they were filmed. She also touches on the casting of the trilogy and reveals that at one point Schygulla was intended to play all three of the women; however, when she revealed this in an interview Fassbinder flew into a rage and that was the end of that idea.

Also included: trailers for all three films in the BRD trilogy (Lola, The Marriage Of Maria Braun and Veronika Voss); caps of the DVD menu, e.g.,

A “Three Movie Buffs” review:
This early Fassbinder film tells the story of two very different women, both friends, in a small German town. One is Berta an innocent maid and virgin who falls hopelessly in love with Karl, the first man she has sex with. The other woman is Alma the town slut. She is sleeping her way through all the soldiers (or pioneers as they are called) that are in town to build a bridge.

The movie is a slice of life comedy/drama that shows what these lonely soldiers’ lives are like in a country at peace. Most of the scenes take place at night, many of them in a local park where the soldiers go to find easy sex. Fassbinder didn’t pull any punches when it came to his characters. Most of them are morally reprehensible, they spend their time getting drunk, having sex and occasionally beating someone up.

He is more sympathetic towards his female characters, but with the exception of Alma, they are portrayed as emotionally needy victims.

As with most Fassbinder movies there is some interesting camera work. One shot in particular is reminiscent of a scene in Citizen Kane. Two characters are talking over breakfast and the camera keeps panning back and forth between them.

This one will please fans of the iconic German director and it’s certainly worth a look. I just don’t know how much appeal it will hold for anyone else.

“A comedy in six parts,” each introduced with a quote taken from a public bathroom wall (“Slave seeks master to train me as his dog,” etc.). The Kaiser Wilhelm Church dominates the Berlin skyline as seen from a glass-paneled, high-rise office, a shooting takes place on a monitor. Surveillance footage? No, the ending of The Devil, Probably. Each generation has the revolutionaries it deserves, after the Baader-Meinhoff affair you’re stuck with middle-class ninnies: leader Volker Spengler secretary Hanna Schygulla, schoolteacher Bulle Ogier, composer Udo Kier, housewife Margit Carstensen. The puppet master is the industrialist (Eddie Constantine) who heralds cinema’s utopian lies (“As long as films are sad, life isn’t”); his corporate must promote security equipment, so he manipulates the radicals into kidnapping him and sits back to enjoy the clown show. Ovid’s “mid course between extremes” has deserted Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s West Germany, the dissenters stand around playing Monopoly and adorn themselves with wigs, veils, and mustaches that look ready to slide off. Raúl Gimenez with fedora and gun is a throwback to the mocking noir tropes of The American Soldier, the group’s infiltration of a government office is staged like a Laurel & Hardy one-reeler. Included in the wackiness is Günther Kaufmann in blackface and albino stache, Y Sa Lo calmly shooting smack in the foreground of a swarming composition, and Mutter Fassbinder (Lilo Pempei) caked with Baby Jane dust at the piano. The old-timers are duly crestfallen: “Back in my day we read more positive things. Hegel, Kant, Nietzsche…” A parallel vaudeville of anger and disillusionment, a Dziga Vertov Group revue done over by Macke. Once the ideals of rebellion are effaced, radicalism itself becomes bread and circuses — mutiny is just a carnival, the plutocrat taken hostage smiles for the camera. With Harry Baer, Hark Bohm, Jürgen Draeger, Peer Raben, and Vitus Zeplichal. – Fernando F. Croce
