Cries and Whispers is a powerful, richly textured exploration of the human soul. Ingmar Bergman resisted using color as a novelty. His use of color in the film is precise and deliberate. Contrast the pale, muted landscape to the rich, deep colors inside the house. The color red, featured prominently in the film (as in Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Red) is used to create a multifaceted visual theme. The effect is one of immersion: a soul foundering in the corporal life blood, a stifling, forced intimacy arising from absence and isolation, and a body slowly consumed by illness. Cries and Whispers is a remarkable film of intoxicating beauty and extraordinary depth, a sublime work of art from a true master.

Literal adaption of Stig Dagerman’s debute novel Ormen (The Snake, 1945). The film focuses on the first chapter of the book, Berättelsen om Iréne (The Story of Iréne). It was rather controversial at the time of its release, because of the graphic violence and the sex scenes (it was even screened at some porn venues in the UK). It was shot by Mac Ahlberg, who would go on directing several classic Swedish porn films in the 1970’s, such as Flossie (1974), Bel Ami (1976) and Molly – familjeflickan (1977). Apart from that it was also praised as being extremely true to the literary source, not only in terms of plot but also regarding overall style.

Written during WWII, The Snake is set in a nervously neutral Sweden on military alert. Dagerman, an army conscript and anarcho-syndicalist, uses the day-to-day setting of military service as a backdrop for an exploration of social justice and the psychology of fear.

The first part of the book, Irene, is about a young woman who works at an army camp and is drawn to Bill, a sadistic soldier. In the second part, We Can’t Sleep, anxiety-infused experiences of Dagerman’s alter ego, Scriber, and fellow conscripts are laid bare. In the last chapter, Scriber spells out his vision for how to conquer fear with an absurd disastrous ending.

This is Dagerman’s first novel, published when he was 22 years old. It took reviewers by surprise: “So powerfully and convincing a debut, that it is unsurpassed by any other Swedish author in this century”, exclaimed Olof Lagercrantz, the editor of the daily Dagens Nyheter.
