Synopsis:
‘Four directors – four styles – four episodes, all relating the events of a single night which has entered the history books: August 12-13, 1961. There are thousands of complex narratives connected with the frontier drawn through the middle of Berlin and each episode relates the story of a difficult decision made on that night.

Episode 1:”Phönix” (“Phoenix”):
As the Berlin Wall goes up, a brigade leader tries to leave a young comerade at home that night so he can celebrate his wedding. The young man’s insistance on coming reminds his older colleague of a similar situation he experienced in 1933.

Episode 2: “Die Prüfung” (“The Test”):
Jutta Huth is shocked when her parents announce they want to flee to West Berlin “in order to finally live,” as her mother puts it. But the eighteen-year-old sees her future in the East, where she hopes to attend university and has just fallen in love.

Episdoe 3: “Materna”:
The mason Materna swore in 1945 that he would never take up a gun again, but the events of the uprising on June 17, 1953, changed his mind. On the night the Berlin Wall goes up, he is standing guard with his gun.

Episode 4: “Der große und der kleine Willi” (“Two Wills”):
Young Will tries to escape to West Berlin in a stolen brigade uniform, but Old Will prevents him. The older man’s sympathetic behavior wins the younger man’s respect and Young Will defends his detainer during a brutal attack by other fugitives who are trying to escape.’

Synopsis:
‘When she discovers her students are hiding their true thoughts and feelings, Karla, a young and idealistic teacher at the start of her career, goes against the routine opportunism, hypocritisy and small-mindedness all around her. Her superiors view her actions with unease, however, and eventually step in to discipline her.
This film, written by renowned author Ulrich Plenzdorf, was considered nihilistic, skeptical and hostile by officials. It became one of the dozen East German films banned in 1965-66. Only in 1990, after the fall of the Wall, was Karla finally screened in cinemas.’

While recovering from a mental breakdown, the young Rita Seidel recalls the last two years, in which she fell in love with Manfred, a chemist who is ten years older. As Manfred became disillusioned with his opportunities in East Germany, he moved to the West. Rita followed him there and tried to persuade him to return but soon realized he would never do it. Rita comes to terms with the past and decides to concentrate on her work and the building of a socialist society. Although some of the characters are shown as overzealous in their support of the regime, for obvious reasons the nature of the East German dictatorship is never depicted or discussed. The Stasi, the all-pervasive secret police headed by the director’s brother Markus Wolf, is not mentioned. The film is set in the period immediately before the erection of the Berlin Wall.

The script was adapted from Christa Wolf’s novel Divided Heaven, released in 1963. The film was removed from circulation on several occasions in the following years, when the Socialist Unity Party of Germany decreed it, depending on the political situation. In 1995, a group of historians and cinema researchers chose Divided Heaven as one of the 100 most important German films ever made. (Wikipedia)
