Narcisus and Psyche is based on a novel by Sandor Weores which was adapted by Vilmos Csaplar and director Gabor Body for a feature-length, 261-minute film. Borrowing the character of Psyche from mythology and placing her in Europe in the 19th century, the authors give her a “modern” life. She is an attractive young woman – and remains so throughout the film, in spite of one hardship after another. Psyche is libidinous, and her prurient interests shock her staid contemporaries. For reasons that the viewer is left to ponder, her life is almost a living punishment for her sexual laxity. Her child is taken away and killed, and although she is in love with her tutor, who has syphilis, she marries another man. She is suffering herself from some affliction, which leads to hospital scenes that are acerbic commentaries on 19th c. Western medicine. Psyche is about to leave for America with her husband, when the story takes another abrupt turn.

kratkyfilm.com: The fortress in the setting of the landscape gives an impression of a den or a detention colony of Kafka’s fiction. The watch-towers, barbed-wire-fencing, severe guarding, all that in all-prevailin feeling of strangeness and mystery provoke fear. Immediately, the question will arise, what is it that is so strictly guarded. We witness the absurdity as expressed by Franz Kafka, and the nonsensicality of the bureaucratic and the barracklike spiritlessness as ridiculed by Jaroslav Hasek in his soldier Svejk. The story takes place in the second half of the eighties. The regime of power is tired, but any changes are out of sight. Some people are trying to find their asylum in their privacy, some defect. Who is not willing to get adapted, lives at the outskirts of the society. So, for example, the forty-year old intellectual Ewald can not perform his profession, as he could not comply with requirements of the political regime. He earns his living just to sustain, and at the moment he is assigned to measure the capacity of water bore in the vicinity of the fortress. He lives in a caravan-trailer, measures the yield of the water source, and as a little boy enjoys the beauty of the nature and the life of a backwoodsman. He makes friends with a priest from a nearby parish and pals up with a local interesting eccentric, who enjoys freedom by being taken for a fool. Can a man be happy just playing his mouth-organ, enjoying the sky over his head, with barbed-wire fences in sight. It is even convincing and moving, just as his falling in love. People who are lonely attract each other. But can the passion of mature lovers make good for the prospects of life?
Ewald makes friends with the head officer of the fortress. Their friendship is a strange, unusual relation of two men of different characters, linked by a feeling of loneliness, need of sincerity and even a mutual respect, which stems from understanding each other.

At last, Ewald finds out, that there is nothing to be guarded in the fortress. It is generally known or at least suspected, but nobody would dare to disclose this well-known secret. A hard pressure is exerted upon Ewald to become one of those who „know“ but keep silent. Ewald is not able to adapt and he does not want to. He has to be liquidated. The commander of the fortress finally shoots him, though reluctantly, but obeying orders of the superiors. For the public an accident is pretended – snakebite by vipers.

The director, Ferenc András successfully managed to draw an authentic tabloid of this era’s (the ’80s) Hungarian social reality in this thriller. This picture undoubtably remained the best crime movie of the Hungarian cinema until A nyomozó (2008) aka. The Investigator. Maybe it’s still the best today.

Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja (Jesus Christ Horoscope, 1988) was made as the second film of a tetralogy. This time the theme is directly an agony of Communism. Cserhalmi plays a demonic-looking poet named Josef K (who, contrary to the author of Der Process / The Trial, has his surname spelt “Kaffka”) who in a black hat and a waving coat walks through different flats and hotels in Budapest and has unclear relationships with three women: Márta (Ildikó Bánsági) and ex-policewoman Kata (Dorottya Udvaros) are murdered in mysterious circumstances; Josef K himself then vanishes in the presence of a meteorologist, Juli (Juli Básti).

Meanwhile, a dreary group of nostalgic men recall Stalin in a luxurious restaurant. They recite Lenin’s texts, meet under black umbrellas and bury one of their fighting comrades. Collectively, they represent dark forces. Their actions, recorded by a videocamera, are parodically accompanied by revolutionary melodies adapted in the style of pop tunes. These are songs from Jancsó’s previous films, the same songs that steeled a nation about to plunge into a class struggle (“In the time of prehistoric man, oh…oh…yoho! / There were no poor or rich, oh…oh…yoho…”).

To a great extent, Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja is a film of quotations: we watch a documentary about an official visit of Nikita Khrushchev in 1958 on the TV, we listen to Lenin’s famous Letter to the Congress containing a critique of Stalin, Josef K tells how Mátyás Rákosi invited an ex-leader of the social democrats, Árpád Szakasits, to dinner in 1950 and let him be arrested, and we hear a disconcertingly long-term meteorological forecast. Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja keeps the grace of a period political “noir film” that testifies to the atmosphere of that short historical era when Gorbachev’s perestroika and glasnost already opened the questions of taboo past but the old guard of leaders and their security apparatus still had the power in Eastern Europe.
