Insurance investigator Jake Winter (Griffith Jones) goes undercover in jail to complete his assignment, on release he’s picked up by seductive Laura (Zena Marshall). who, believing Winter to be an ex-con, claims she wants to hire him to recover a letter from a man who is blackmailing her husband Charles Dexter. Winter is intrigued, and after dropping in at the insurance office to request his phony police record is quashed, goes to meet Laura and her husband at their home.

That evening Winter arrives at for the scheduled meeting to be greeted by Laura, who claims her husband is running late. Winter begins to feel sleepy and all too late realises his drink has been spiked. When he awakes he finds a dead body on the bedroom floor – the real Mrs Dexter. Framed for murder and wanted by the police, Winter strives to prove innocence with the help of new boss Susan (Hazel Court).
