Three men break into a bank and are pursued by three other men. The burglars have been at this sort of thing for years; the policemen have only been in their jobs for a few months. Two young men chase a girl because they want to learn how to tango, but soon find themselves caught up in a dance for a fortune – even though a million ain’t worth as much as it used to be. Hard work is hardly ever worth it, but it’s always worthwile keeping oneself occupied, says Bruno Markward to Bubi. In order to help his friend, Bubi trains as a bricklayer so that he can knock a hole through the ceiling. But because women are never easy, Bruno the expert winds up in front of the arch-criminal, Lotz, with whom he has already done time not so long ago in the same Nazi prison. Graf the waiter is caught in bed – but not with his wife. Julian, a trainee police inspector who is definitely still wet behind the ears, loses his friend Bubi and his girlfriend Tina, but because he can run faster, he does manage to catch Lubowitz – the fox with the mask. There is a wonderful canary in a supporting role. Berlin, just after the war, between winter and spring, is backdrop for these city-dwellers who find themselves in difficult but also humorous situations.

Synopsis:
In Arkansas, a stagecoach is robbed by Colonel Brinkley’s gang. What the gang is really after is a treasure map one of the stagecoach passengers carries. However, Mr. Engel only has half the map. The other half of the treasure map is held by Engel’s partner, a Mr. Patterson. Even so, the gang kills Engel and steal his half a map. Later, Fred Engel, the son of the murdered stagecoach passenger, seeks help to find his father’s killers and retrieve the map. He contacts famous frontier scout Old Shatterhand and his Apache blood brother Winnetou. The three men set out to catch the killers. Fred Engel reveals to his two friends that his father’s missing map pinpoints the location of a gold treasure at Silver Lake. They head toward the farm owned by Mr. Patterson, Engel’s business partner. Patterson has the other half of the map and a daughter, Ellen, whom Fred is in-love with. Unfortunately, Colonel Brinkley’s gang has the same idea of retrieving the other half of the treasure map, since the gang already has the first half of the map.

“Schtonk!” is a satirical German movie, retelling the hoax of the Hitler Diaries.

Subtitled “Der Film zum Buch vom Führer” (“The film accompanying the Führer’s book”), the movie is a grotesque farce about the events when, in 1983, German Stern magazine began to publish, with great fanfare, the 60 volumes of the alleged diaries of Adolf Hitler – which two weeks later turned out to be entirely fake. That story is commonly described one of the greatest failures of modern journalism overall.

The film is widely considered a hilarious tale, making fun not only of the events and characters who were involved in the hoax, and who are only thinly disguised in the movie, but also of the discomfort Germany has with its difficult past. It is especially fun to viewers familiar with the country.

The film is co-written and directed by Helmut Dietl and, among his many respected comedies, frequently considered his best. Dietl researched the scandal for two years and has been quoted as having to leave out several real events from the movie because they were too outrageous.

The title is a bow to Charlie Chaplin’s classic “The Great Dictator”, in which the Führer repeatedly uses “Schtonk!” as an expression of disgust – the word has no meaning in German but resembles Stunk (pronounced as shtoonk), a colloquial expression for a scuffle or altercation.

Plot
