Frank and Eleanor Perry’s heartbreaking feature adaptation of three Truman Capote stories, produced in collaboration with Capote himself. The stories all center around the relationship between two slightly odd, outcast characters, and they all hover around the idea of loss — but each winds up in a starkly different place, perhaps even in a different genre. Magnificently written, acted, and directed – an absolute shame that it’s not better known.

Not-so-grieving widow Claire Marrable is horrified to hear that her supposedly wealthy husband has apparently left her penniless. But, being a practical (and resourceful) type, she hits on a scheme to keep her in the comfort to which she wishes to become accustomed. Relocating to the Arizona desert, she hires elderly housekeepers with no known relatives (but tidy nest eggs) and sends them to their rewards a bit sooner than they planned. And their remains become mulch for the widow’s growing garden as each is buried under a quickly flourishing sapling. This later entry in the “horror hag” sweepstakes features absolutely wonderful performances from Geraldine Page, who has a high old time as the haughty, demented and thoroughly relentless Mrs. Marrable, and Ruth Gordon, as Alice Dimmock, her new housekeeper, who isn’t quite what she seems to be. On the sidelines are Rosemary Forsyth, herself a (young) widow with a nephew, Robert Fuller as Miss Gordon’s nephew, and Joan Huntington as the scheming wife of Page’s nephew. With a cast made up of widows and nephews, how scary can “Aunt Alice” be? Not very. But it’s a delicious black comedy which allows Page and Gordon the opportunity to give the performances of their lives. There’s also a neat cameo from Mildred Dunnock (“Death Of A Salesman”) as the luckless servant who precedes Miss Gordon. One of the best “Grand Guignol” films ever made!

Quote:
In December 1965, Telsun had announced that production of the fifth movie had been postponed once again (the original postponement having been part of the February 1965 announcement). The film, to be produced by Sam Spiegel, was to highlight UN peacekeeping efforts along the India-Pakistan border, and some filming had already been completed. However, an armed conflict had erupted between the two nations over the disputed Kashmir territory (including one of the largest tank battles fought since World War II), and a Telsun spokesman announced that production would not resume while the conflict continued. Spiegel had by this time moved on to another project (the 1966 movie The Chase, starring Marlon Brando and the little-known Robert Redford, whom Spiegel had personally chosen for the movie), and as it turned out the project apparently was never restarted.

This was not completely the end of Telsun, however.

In the Internet Movie Database there appears a 1967 movie called La Chica del Lunes – in English, Monday’s Child. Leopoldo Torres-Nilsson, director of Once Upon a Tractor, was back, with Academy Award nominees Arthur Kennedy and Geraldine Page starring as a troubled husband and wife who move to Puerto Rico with their daughter (Deborah Reed), where they face a life of poverty and depression as Kennedy tries to find work, while Page, as the alcoholic wife, lends her daughter out to the locals.

So, other than the downbeat subject matter, what has this to do with Telsun? Well, as it turns out, the U.S. distribution rights to the movie belonged to none other than the Telsun Foundation.

Was this the mysterious, fifth, never-seen-on-TV movie?

It’s hard to tell because, frankly, it’s hard to find out much information about Telsun. There’s no one location on the Internet with much information about it; a myriad of sources went into this brief account. A call to the television division of the United Nations produced a puzzled representative and a promise to contact the UN’s research library for further information – a promise that was never fulfilled. If one were inclined to believe in black helicopters, the strange story of the Telsun Foundation would hardly dissuade you from believing in conspiracy theories.

Nonetheless, Telsun does leave its own legacy, if you’re willing to search for it. The series featured perhaps the greatest collection of talent ever attached to a television project; the list of producers, directors and actors reads like a Who’s Who of 1960s movies and television. The fact that such big names were willing to work for scale on what were essentially made for TV movies attests to the growing power of the medium.

Based on Peter DeVries’ novel Witch’s Milk, Pete ‘n’ Tillie stars Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett in the title roles. Middle-aged when they first meet, eternally joking Pete and repressed “old maid” Tillie don’t immediately hit it off. Gradually, their friendship deepens into love and culminates (reluctantly, on Pete’s part) in marriage, eleven years of which is explored in this film. Throughout the funny and tragic moments, and despite the many breakups, their love endures. Oscar nominations went to screenwriter Julius J. Epstein and supporting actress Geraldine Page

A disarming, touching “little” film, Pete ‘n’ Tillie is far from perfect, but it has a heart and soul that for many will make up for its deficiencies. Pete is one of those films that mixes comedy and drama, not always in an easy manner and not always successfully, and that fact alone will deter many. But if one can look past the “bumpiness” of its style, one can find a wistful, somewhat melancholy picture that is at times quite affecting. Julius J. Epstein’s screenplay may have its ups and downs and its share of lurches, but when it is “on,” it is quite good; even when it’s not “on,” it’s still at least partially engaging. Martin Ritt directs with subtlety when called for, and occasionally when it’s not, and he’s also unsuccessful at blending the comedy and drama seamlessly; yet he brings a reality and a sensitivity to the proceedings that helps to provide a little magic. Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett both play down their comedic leanings, Burnett especially so; if that denudes the film of some possible laughs, it pays off in the creation of characters that are a bit deeper than one would have expected. Geraldine Page is a riot, and Barry Nelson and Rene Auberjonois do well as well.
