An excellent little suspense thriller with an air of the occult, filmed on location in Morocco by Julien Duvivier. Two versions were made: a German version with Anton Walbrook, and this French version with René Lefèvre and Harry Baur.

One by one, a group of five travellers starts to die, apparently the result of a sorcerer’s curse…

Labeled in the credits as a “vaudeville filme” [sorry, can’t get the accent mark on the filme], Le coq du regiment (dir. Maurice Cammage) was filmed at the Courbevoie studio near Paris, using the Photo-Sonor technology developed by French radio. The film could also be described as a comique troupier, a comedy film about military life, a popular French film genre of the 1930s. Le coq du regiment features the comic actor Fernandel, as does another military comedy of the period, Pathe Natan’s Les gaites de l’escadron (dir. Maurice Tourneur, 1932). Le coq du regiment also features stage-trained actors performing a script adapted from the stage, and direct-recorded sound. The exterior scenes towards the film’s beginning include some strange, discontinuous cuts, as well as some false eyeline cues. The one thing that surprised me is that the film doesn’t include a song, although there is a music credit for “Fernand Heintz [Ed. Cambell-Conelly]”; moreover, “couplets,” i.e., song verses, are credited to Jean Manse and Alin Monjardin (the latter is the author of the stage play).
