Upon the death of his brother, Larry Talbot returns from America to his ancestral home in Wales. He visits a gypsy camp with village girl Jenny Williams, who is attacked by Bela, a gypsy who has turned into a werewolf. Larry kills the werewolf but is bitten during the fight. Bela’s mother tells him that this will cause him to become a werewolf at each full moon. Larry confesses his plight to his unbelieving father, Sir John, who then joins the villagers in a hunt for the wolf. Transformed by the full moon, Larry heads for the forest and a fateful meeting with both Sir John and Gwen Conliffe.

Jerry Donovan is just an ordinary American, who loves his family but takes his freedoms for granted. He goes to sleep, and finds himself in an alternate universe in which everyone refers to everyone else as “comrade.” And we know what that means—Jerry and his kind are denounced as “an ugly remnant of a diseased bourgeois class,” all the churches have been shuttered, and there’s a Soviet-style interrogation, much like the one in The Great Rights. Extra special kudos to Robert Conrad, who appears briefly as a factory comrade seeing to it that Jerry meets quota.

In old Vienna, Count Seebruck (Thomas Gomez) is the impresario for the Royal Theatre. His biggest headache is his soprano diva, Jarmila (Jane Farrar). That’s why he’s more than willing to listen his aide Carl’s nephew, Franz (Turhan Bey), and Franz’s fiance, soprano Angela (Susanna Foster). Her voice sounds remarkably like the Royal Theatre long-lost star, Marcellina (June Vincent), who mysteriously disappeared ten years before.
Her disappearance is no mystery to Dr. Friedrich Hohner (Boris Karloff), the theatre’s physician. Spurned by former lover Marcellina, Dr. Hohner remembers back (in a flashback) to the night she finally rejected him, as well as her strangulation death — by his own hands. When Dr. Hohner hears Angela sing, he at first thinks it’s Marcellina, come back to haunt him again. However, when he sees Angela, he immediately schemes to silence her singing voice. Will Angela sing for the King’s (Scotty Beckett) command performance of The Magic Voice? Well….

After being forced to shoot a friend in a duel, fast-gun Randolph Scott swears to take off his gunbelt forever but finds himself drawn to the middle of a range war when he’s blamed for the murder of his best friend. Now Scott must prove to the dead man’s kid brother (John Miles) that he’s innocent. Naturally, Scott is forced to strap on guns once more to bring an end to the tyranny of local land baron Griff Barnett, his devious foreman Bruce Cabot, hired gunslinger Forrest Tucker (in a really underwritten, wasted role) and mean, crooked deputy Grant Withers. To complicate matters, Scott becomes involved with the land baron’s two daughters, nice girl Dorothy Hart and conniving Barbara Britton who is in love with Cabot. Alan Le May’s script from Zane Grey’s TWIN SOMBREROS seems to need a bit more “polish”, but Scott is terrific as always, plus the gorgeous Sedona locations (abetted by Vasquez Rocks, Jauregui Ranch and Monogram Ranch) in Cinecolor are enough to recommend this one.

Despite being a fairly routine oater, Gunfighters was a key film in the development of the B-western. It’s success led producer Harry Joe Brown and star Randolph Scott to team up for a further 16 films, culminating in the legendary “Ranown” cycle with Budd Boetticher.
