Peter Good, an idealistic young farmhand, finds that Amy, the girl of his dreams, does not requite his love, and goes forth in search of adventures. He arrives at a roadhouse to which Amy has been brought by Harry Benson, a young city sport wanted by the authorities for bootlegging, and climbs into the car in which Amy is being abducted. A running fight ensues, which ends when the car crashes, slightly bruising all occupants. Harry is taken into custody by dry agents and reconciliation between Amy and Peter follows.

Synopsis
Often described as “the first American independent film”, von Sternberg’s The Salvation Hunters is an austere and obscurely naturalist drama about “humans who crawl near the floor.”

“It’s hard now to appreciate the bomb-shell that Sternberg’s first feature must have been in Hollywood at the time: its slow pace, its lyrical pessimism, and its strong emphasis on the psychological over the physical set it far apart from anything that the American cinema had produced” (Tony Rayns, Time Out Film Guide). Shot for less than five thousand dollars in the span of three weeks, the groundbreaking Salvation Hunters announced the emergence of a major new talent, even if audiences of the day didn’t quite know what to make of its grimy settings, glum tone, and overt symbolizing. The film follows “The Boy” and “The Girl” as they escape the deplorable living conditions of their riverfront home to the city, only to encounter “The Brute,” who is hell-bent on having the girl to himself. “A starkly poetic tale of poverty and depression which, after being hissed at its premiere, was hailed as a masterpiece by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin” (Tag Gallagher, senses of cinema).

Directed by Monta Bell, who deserves to be remembered alongside Von Stroheim and other directorial giants of the era, the picture stars Bell’s favorite actress, Norma Shearer, in a dual role. She plays a rich girl, Florence, and a poor girl named Molly, a gangster’s moll.

Having the same actress play both roles is the brilliant touch. The women, of course, look alike, yet no one in the film notices. In the eyes of the world they’re totally different people. The audience, however, sees them as through the eyes of an omniscient observer — recognizing plainly that these women are, essentially, the same.

Humanity, social concern and a deep sensitivity — spiked with wit and a total command of visual storytelling — are the characteristics of Bell’s style. Early in the film Molly gets out of reform school and, in a cold, beautifully stark close-up, checks her reflection in the window of a horse-drawn carriage. When the carriage pulls away, we see that it’s a hearse.

Bell creates an elliptical, dream-like landscape, in which almost everyone pursues a vision that can’t be realized — and everyone wishes he or she were something more. In “Lady of the Night” people look in the mirror and search their reflection hoping to find someone else there.
