Well-made Clarence Brown pre-Code soaper with Joan Crawford (Brown directs Joan 5 times) costumed by Adrian (he does this a total of 28 times) and photographed by Oliver T. Marsh (he did a total of 15 films with Joan). First class production crew yields a first class film.

Joan plays a `shopgirl’ character that could have had no heart (Barbara Stanwyck would have excelled at such an interpretation) but the writers gave her an innate goodness that warms Sadie McKee to her audience. Edward Arnold stands out as the drunken millionaire that must have served as a role model for Dudley Moore years later in `Arthur.’ His sock in the jaw to Joan is unexpected and looks very real. Gene Raymond does well as the love interest and if that was he singing – he did it well. His final scene is very good and somewhat unusual. Franchot Tone does not appear to have had the opportunity to develop his character sufficiently to make him more effective. It must have been good enough, because he got Joan after the film was completed. A somewhat zaftig Esther Ralston still manages to demonstrate why she was `The American Venus’ and why Raymond spent so much of his time smiling. Why her character does not react to Raymond singing a love song to Joan in the Apollo Theater is beyond me. Leo G. Carroll does a superb job as the butler – his distain for the lower class Joan is great.

Joan’s character has many choices in this film and she generally comes out ahead with some short deviations into taking what she can get when she can get it. She gives great looks at Arnold when she realizes she must be his lover now that they are married and later to her friend when she exclaims, `So I’ve got everything, huh?’ and while reflecting what she has done after throwing Tone out of her house. Arnold also has choices and responds well to the outcome of the marriage. Although the two policemen in the film do not take the `tip’ offered by Joan, they run out after the taxicab man who gets their share presumably to get their cut out outside the presence of Joan.

This is excellent movie making and a must see for Joan Crawford fans (or anyone else that wants to see a good movie). Highly recommended.

Five men rob a train in Utah of 10 million dollars in gold and head to Los Angeles in 3 trucks hoping to meet up with their beautiful accomplice, and leave the country.

Letterboxd reviews
★★★★ Watched by Gramercy Riff 04 Oct, 2016

Want to see a really rad heist? Pick up a copy of Plunder Road and watch the first 15 minutes. Wet roads. Heavy rainfall. Nervous men in trucks. They are carrying something explosive. A train approaches and a meticulously executed robbery ensues. Now you want to check out the rest too. You should, it has only 72 minutes on the clock. The men have a sound plan, they are methodical. Some are nervous, others cold as ice. They split up. Three trucks on their way to the border, facing one roadblock after the other.

Will they make it? A simple and thus effective plot, the shady night photography is gorgeous. There’s a heartbreaking scene at a gas station, the last getaway car is brilliant and you’ll never guess the femme fatale. This made me think of certain French classics I love. Like Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear, Jean-Pierre Melville’s crime films and Jules Dassin’s Rififi. This may be raising the bar a little too high, but it certainly is a little gem in the noir catalogue. And it should rank high in any heist list.

A model marries a struggling engineer; but he won’t let her keep her job, and they can’t pay the bills, while she is wooed by a wealthy drinker.
Michael Martin (Gene Raymond) tells Paul Dodson (Ned Sparks) he knows of a better job, and they get fired. Michael asks modeling Carolyn (Barbara Stanwyck) to marry, but she wants to keep her job. After work they go dancing. Michael now earns $35 a week; but Carolyn makes $50. They get married during his lunch hour. Carolyn cries and quarrels with Michael. He hits an officer and is put in jail. In court the drunk Hugh McKenzie (Robert Young) is fined and meets Carolyn. She pleads for Michael, and he gets 30 days or $50. Hugh loans them the money. Michael’s electricity is off. Hugh is paid and reluctantly leaves. Michael carries Carolyn in.
Carolyn looks at the bills. Paul and Michael go to work, and Carolyn and Paul’s wife Mattie (Helen Broderick) go shopping; Carolyn buys a dress for $149. Carolyn tells Michael she could get her job back, but he says she is “out of circulation.” They take in drunk Hugh, and the next day he vacuums. Carolyn pushes out a bill collector, and flowers arrive from a secret admirer, Hugh. Mr. Donovan (Billy Gilbert) repossesses the furniture. Michael on a telephone pole in the snow calls Carolyn to celebrate New Year on $50 he saved. Hugh brings in two large bottles. He, Carolyn, Mattie, and the furniture movers drink champagne until six. Michael and Paul wait past eight, and Carolyn and Mattie arrive drunk. At the nightclub Carolyn tells Michael she is going back to work, and they argue. At midnight Mattie kisses Paul; but Carolyn cries, as Michael walks home. Carolyn stops him on the stairs, and they kiss. The apartment is furnished, and they find a note from Hugh.
The maid Mamie (Hattie McDaniel) says she works after marriage, and she doesn’t understand white men. Michael sees Mamie, who explains. Carolyn rushes home, pays Mamie, and sees Michael. He packs and says he hates lying; but Carolyn walks out first.
Drunk Michael reads a divorce paper. He and Paul throw bricks in the McKenzie store windows. Hugh brings no charges. Michael wants to fight Hugh, who says he loves Carolyn. Hugh shows Carolyn his country house and says it could be hers; but she says no. Hugh’s father says that Carolyn sobered up Hugh. Michael is going to sail on a dangerous job, and Paul decides to go too; but when Mattie sees the insurance policy, she won’t let Paul go. They find Carolyn and Hugh fishing and tell her of Michael’s risk. They go to the pier. Carolyn stops Michael and pleads. Hugh sends his chauffeur to start a fight with Michael, who is arrested. Carolyn explains; then she, Paul, and Mattie are arrested instead. Carolyn offers to quit her job and manage Michael’s home office, and he is happy.
Amid Depression struggles this story explores a woman’s need and desire to work despite the social conditioning of her husband.
