The movie is famous for a musical number where Gene Kelly dances with Jerry the Mouse (the voice of Sara Berner). Kelly is live action while Jerry is animated. Tom the Cat appears briefly in the sequence as a butler. Originally, the producers wanted to use Mickey Mouse for this segment, but Walt Disney refused to allow his character to be used in an MGM film. Film buffs are still puzzled over Disney’s refusal to cooperate with MGM because Mickey Mouse had actually appeared with Jimmy Durante in MGM’s 1934 comedy Hollywood Party and Disney even produced a short Technicolor animated musical novelty for the same film.

The film offers rare glimpses of the MGM studio, including the Thalberg Building, the backlot, the commissary, and one of the soundstages, as well as an on-screen performance by the studio orchestra. There is also a memorable scene at the Hollywood Bowl, where Sinatra sings “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” after Iturbi and a group of young pianists have performed a spectacular arrangement of Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. In the audition scene with Iturbi, Grayson sings a special arrangement for soprano and orchestra of the waltz from Peter Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Many of the memorable scenes in this film were later featured in the That’s Entertainment tributes to MGM.

In this send-up of musical and post-war optimism, the dreams of Army buddies Kelly, Dan Dailey, and Michael Kidd all fall apart, and their ten-year reunion is a “frost”; Dailey’s bitter song “Situation-wise” takes aim at the stultifying effect of the quintessentially 1950s life of an advertising executive. Even though the trio finally bonds over a disastrous TV appearance, Fair Weather takes further aim at television’s plastic insincerity and technical poverty. The film’s slightly anxious putdowns of television are underlined by its own imaginative, almost competitive use of CinemaScope, particularly in the trio’s energetic, un-pan-and-scannable trash can ballet, and the use of triple split screens and masking to visualize the friends’ alienation. Even the musical joy emanating from the garbage can number and Kelly’s impressive roller skate dance down a New York street cannot quite smooth over the underlying bitterness in It’s Always Fair Weather, turning it into one of the more intriguing productions from MGM’s storied Freed Unit. — Lucia Bozzola

While working as a counselor at a summer camp, college-student Marjorie Morgenstern falls for 32-year-old Noel Airman, a would-be dramatist working at a nearby summer theater. Like Marjorie, he is an upper-middle-class New York Jew (born ‘Ehrman’), but has fallen away from his roots, and Marjorie’s parents object among other things to his lack of a suitable profession, such as medicine or law. Noel himself warns Marjorie repeatedly that she’s much too naive and conventional for him, but they nonetheless fall in love. As they pursue an on-again-off-again relationship, Marjorie completes her studies at Hunter College, and works to establish an acting career, while Noel first leaves the theater for a job with an advertising agency, but later completes a musical he’d started writing before he and Marjorie had first met. Meanwhile, their relationship deepens (though, consistent with ’50s Hollywood mores, the more full-fledged sexuality in their relationship is never explicitly communicated). They plan to marry, but after the musical’s critical failure on Broadway, Noel runs away. Marjorie finally tracks him down at the summer theater where they first met–and, realizing that this is probably where he belongs, finally gives up on the relationship. Helping her to move on with her life is Wally, once Noel’s assistant, now a very successful Broadway playwright, and all along, Marjorie’s unrequited lover.

Synopsis:

In Los Angeles, artist Sonny Malone reluctantly returns to his job at Airflow Records – his job to do poster-sized exact renderings of album covers for on-site promotions, the renderings to be as close to the originals as possible – as he could not make a living as a freelance artist, where he could truly use his artistic vision. On his first day back at Airflow, he gets sidetracked by the thoughts of a young woman who literally roller skates into him. What he is unaware of is that their initial encounter and subsequent encounters are not by accident as she, Kira, a muse, was awakened by his lamentations about his art, she sent to help him achieve his artistic vision. This day, Sonny also meets aging Danny McGuire, a former big band musician turned construction company owner, he who wants to return to his roots by owning a live music venue. Danny initially and Sonny also do not know that their meeting is not by accident as Sonny will soon discover that Kira was part of his past. Sonny and Danny achieving their dreams is threatened by Kira knowingly albeit unpurposefully having broken the rules.
