Anthony Quinn as an amnesiac who is wanted for murder? You got him in The Long Wait, and not one but four femmes noir. Three blondes and a brunette. All leggy and not backward in coming forward.

This violent and brutal flick has Mickey Spillane all over it. The second Spillane novel to be filmed in Hollywood – after I, The Jury (1953) – The Long Wait takes pulp fiction down to a new level. A preposterous plot with more holes than a pair of fishnet nylons itches a perversely compelling pastiche of noir tropes: amnesia, corruption in high places, crooked cops, frame-ups, violence, duplicitous dames, and sex. But no Mike Hammer. Our protagonist is strictly an amateur. But that doesn’t make him any less able to dizzy the dames nor prove his innocence – even if the key to the frame is patently absurd.

Quinn is a hunk and knows it. His kisses and clinches are not for the faint-hearted. He beds the first girl to show an interest. In fact, she picks him up. A frank come-on and cut to her apartment, where after a shower she is ready for the bout naked under her wrap. You get the picture.

Despite a strange incoherence and lackadaisical direction from Brit Victor Saville, the talented lensing of Franz Planer sustains visual interest, with suitably dark lighting and expressionist flourishes.

This brings us to the climax which melds sex and violent entrapment into an amazing expressionist sequence involving a spot-light and deft crane shots. Quinn is tied-up in a chair and a girl called Venus trussed on the floor is being goaded by the bad guy to crawl to Quinn for one last kiss. The resolution is neat and unexpected. One of those rare moments when you are left open-mouthed before the craft and audacity of what you have just seen. Totally weird.

The third film from pioneering auteur Samuel Fuller, and the first in a cycle of WW2 films rooted deeply in his own experiences as a WW2 infantryman.

From Time Out London:
A characteristically hard-hitting war movie from Fuller, charting the fortunes of Gene Evans’ Sergeant Zack, sole survivor of a PoW massacre in Korea. Saved by a Korean orphan and joining up with other GIs cut off from their units, Evans’ cynical veteran embodies the writer-director’s abiding thesis that, to survive the madness of war, a ruthless individualism is necessary. Fuller glamorises neither his loner protagonist nor the war itself: if he clearly supports the US presence in Korea, battle is still a chaotic, deadly affair, and nobody has much idea of why they fight. The action scenes are terrific, belying the movie’s very low budget. – Geoff Andrew

Fixed Bayonets! (1951) is a war film written and directed by Samuel Fuller and produced by Twentieth Century-Fox during the Korean War. It is Fuller’s second film about the Korean War. In his motion picture debut, James Dean appears briefly in the film.

The film is set in the first winter of Korean War. The story follows the fate of a lone 48 man platoon left as a rear guard to defend a hill in hostile territory, to cover the withdrawal of their division over an exposed bridge. The subplot explores the psychological makeup of the individuals charged with leadership of the platoon, and therein examines the nature of service and valor. Ultimately command of the platoon falls upon Cpl. Denno (Richard Basehart), who has an innate aversion to responsibility for the lives of others.

TRIVIA
• Feature film debut of James Dean. Uncredited, Dean played Doggie. This movie represents the first ever appearance of Dean in a motion picture.
• The technical advisor, Raymond Harvey, US Army, was awarded the Distinguish Service Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor), two Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts, during WW II and won the Medal of Honor in the Korean War. While working on this film he became close friends with the director Samuel Fuller. Apparently, the US Army assigned Harvey as technical adviser to the production after they had had issues with Fuller’s earlier movie about the Korean War, The Steel Helmet.
• Apparently, one of this film’s working titles, ‘Old Soldiers Never Die’, was inspired by a 1951 speech made by ‘General Douglas MacArthur’. The title is derived from the line “old soldiers never die, they just fade away” from the Barracks Ballad. MacArthur made the speech just prior to his retirement at a Joint Session of the US Congress.
• The 14th May 1951 edition of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ stated that this picture would not directly be based on the life of ‘General Douglas MacArthur’ despite the film’s then working title ‘Old Soldiers Never Die’ being used, a phrase associated with MacArthur.
• ‘Time’ magazine reported in July 1951 that the working title of this movie, ‘Old Soldiers Never Die’, would be dropped as it was “not suitable” anymore for the picture.
• This film’s opening prologue states: “This is the story of American troops in Korea early in 1951. It is dedicated to the Queen of Battles-the United States Infantry. We give our grateful thanks to the Department of the Army for its encouragement, advice and active cooperation in the preparation and production of this picture”.
• This movie was originally going to be cast starring Rory Calhoun, Jeffrey Hunter, Gary Merrill and Robert Wagner according to a May 1951 edition of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
• This movie was the first film in a seven picture deal between writer/director Samuel Fuller and studio Twentieth Century-Fox.
• Second movie about the Korean War which was directed by Samuel Fuller. The first had been The Steel Helmet.
• Gene Evans replaced Gary Merrill according to the 16th July 1951 edition of ‘Daily Variety’. Director Samuel Fuller had previously collaborated with Evans on the earlier Korean War movie, The Steel Helmet.
• Feature film debut of Paul Richards. Uncredited, Richards played Ramirez.
• Writer/director Samuel Fuller wrote the part of Paddy for actor Patrick Fitzgibbon according to an August 1951 edition of trade paper ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. The two had served together during World War II.
• According to media reports, a number of movie companies were interested in using this film’s working title, ‘Old Soldiers Never Die’.
• A number of actors were once announced as going to appear in this picture according to ‘the Hollywood Reporter’. These included: Frank Belt, Patrick Holmes, William Lundmark, Jack Morrow, Greg Rogers, Dudley Ross, Tommy Walker and Steve Wayne.
• The production had difficulties in casting extras for the opening retreat sequence. A product assistant located some dancers in a musical and they were able to be fitted out in costumes for the opener. Director Samuel Fuller had them feign battle weariness by stacking their military packs and uniforms with weights.
• This picture is set in 1950 during the first winter of the Korean War.

Made in an age when the science fiction film genre was dominated by giant insects and monsters from beneath the sea (not that there’s anything wrong with those) “Donovan’s Brain” stands out as a more understated (and under-appreciated) gem.

A movie about a dead financier’s brain being kept alive in a fish tank as it takes over the minds of people around it could easily become silly; in fact it would be hard for such a premise NOT to be silly (which is why Steve Martin loosely adapted the premise for his comedy “The Man with Two Brains.”)

But thanks to deliberate pacing and fine performances from its cast, what could have been an exercise in the ridiculous becomes instead a surprisingly effective film. The very reserved script keeps “techno-babble” to a minimum as the story unfolds, and a low budget limits most of the visual and special effects to the very basic, but rather than feeling “cheap,” the film’s spare quality instead tends to limit distractions from the story.

In 1944’s “The Lady and the Monster” (a lesser and earlier adaptation of Curt Siodmak’s novel) the brain’s takeovers were signaling obviously, using lighting and musical cues. But in “Donovan’s Brain” you know the brain has taken control solely due to the controlled and subtle performance of Lew Ayres, who indicates a transformation in Dr. Cory by as little as a change in posture and a hardening of his expression (no such kudos for Steve Brodie as Herbie Yocum, whose inane “zombie walk” stands out in its cheesiness.) Gene Evans also did well in the movie playing Cory’s assistant Dr. Frank Schratt, and future first lady Nancy Davis turns in a serviceable, if somewhat wooden, performance as Cory’s steadfast wife.

“Donovan’s Brain” will not be anyone’s favorite movie; coming out in a year which also saw the release of classics like “The War of the Worlds,” “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Invasion from Mars,” it’s not even anyone’s favorite sci-fi movie of 1953. But although it’s not considered a classic, this small film far overcomes its B-movie title. It’s better than it sounds, and well worth a look.
