Synopsis:
Arturo is an unscrupulous art dealer and Renzo his socially-awkward painter and longtime friend. Willing to risk it all, they develop an extreme and ludicrous plan to save themselves.

Review:
With My Masterpiece, director Gastón Duprat (the director of the 2016 Goya Award-winning The Distinguished Citizen) sets out to make an entertaining, crowd-pleasing thriller that takes place in the art world and deconstructs capitalism. This tale of forgeries and friendships survives on fine performances from Guillermo Francella and Luis Brandoni as artist and dealer before an unexpected twist gives momentum to the final act. Playing out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, the movie ultimately satisfies, even if it never reaches the heights or the insightful observations of Ruben Östlund’s similarly ambitious and actual masterpiece, the Palme d’Or-winning The Square.

There is a false note in the memorable opening shot. We hear the voice of an off-screen gallery guide challenging her tour group, and the audience, to really look and study a picture by famed artist Renzo Nervi (Brandoni). It feels like an educational art film, but it’s just one of the many ways in which Duprat keeps the viewer unsettled. The tone quickly shifts as the narrative voiceover by gallery owner Arturo Silva (Francella) kicks in: there are echoes of Charles Dickens’ Hard Times as he describes Buenos Aires as both the best and the worst city in the world. He also has a confession to make: “I’m a murderer.”

Told in flashback, we rewind five years back to a time when Nervi was considered to be an artist past his prime. Even his trusted art dealer Arturo is beginning to lose patience with him, but just as their relationship seems to be nearing an end, an accident brings them closer together again. They are like chalk and cheese – the liberal artist and the hard-nosed capitalist – but they always manage to find a compromise that allows them to work together. As Arturo meets myriad characters in the Buenos Aires art world, each of them seems to be a good candidate for the grave. With one art dealer, there is even a big and pertinent discussion on whether Nervi’s paintings will rise in value when he dies. It is not a world for the sympathetic.

It’s quite a feat by Duprat that he manages to make the many tonal shifts work in a fitting and fun finale. The actors deserve a lot of credit, too, as their performances manage to carry the film through some slipshod scenes. But then the twist is as clever as the opening scene, and My Masterpiece proves that it’s no fraud.

Synopsis
Jorge (Sergio Pángaro), a 40-year-old man, single, shy and circumspect, works as a nurse in a geriatric house. There, he looks after Romano (Alberto Laiseca), an old man who hardly walks and does not speak, with a special attention.
Jorge regularly keeps paper rolls with drawings. With Polo’s help (Diego Perdomo), a photographer neighbor of his, he makes a folder with these paintings, which together with a brief resume, he presents in a prestigious art gallery. To his surprise, these works are considered of great value and originality, and a few months later a successful exhibition makes this nurse suddenly get into the world of art and he starts to be a well-known artist.
He gives up his job as a nurse and takes Romano to live with him. It is only then when the spectator finds out that it is this last one who makes the drawings. Jorge looks after him with affection; he helps him and buys him all the necessary elements for him to go on drawing.
Gradually, he changes his social condition, his way of dressing and his general appearance, while he transforms his apartment with a more modern and elegant style.
Among the persons with whom he relates are Losada (Enrique Gagliesi), the owner of the art gallery who discovers him, rich and with an overbearing personality; Ana (Ana Laura Loza), a young girl interested in art with whom he starts a love affair; Emiliano (Andrés Duprat), an elegant professor and art curator who will be his adviser and almost a friend.
In a moment, when Jorge is asked to produce a bigger amount of work for a more important exhibition, the old man stops drawing. After unsuccessfully trying to stimulate him and under the gallery owner’s pressure, he tries to copy his style and to make his own drawings, but although they do not notice the difference, the pictures fail to convince.
Suddenly, in a sort of trance, Romano starts to paint his previous works covering them in black; this makes Jorge, who up to the moment had been trying to keep up appearances, loose hopes. By chance, Emiliano sees the drawings and thinks they are amazing and when they are exhibited they happened to be very much praised by the experts.
Things get worse when the international gallery owners discover him as a new promise of South American art and propose him to continue his work in an international level, with extremely higher incomes, but for that he has to move to Rome.
