A short film based on the work of choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker where a woman dances before being joined by a man and the two then dance together.
‘Rosa’ (1992) was filmed at the foyer of the Ghent Opera House, Belgium, which was undergoing a huge restoration at the time (1991).

A film that calls to mind Denis’s Towards Mathilde, as Greenaway relinquishes his baroque directorial flourishes to simply stage Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker’s choreography as an act of artistic solidarity, curiosity, and appreciation. And if I enjoyed Greenaway’s film significantly more than Denis’s, it’s only because I found the dancing so much more fascinating and beautiful. A lonely lament transformed into a frenzied pas de deux, and the resigned grace of simply getting back on with it once the whirlwind’s spent and done; a whole emotional minefield condensed into the way two bodies move with and without one another. Indeed, a film that made me ponder for the first time just how much Denis and Greenaway have in common; of the great filmmakers, the two perhaps most interested in the expressivity of the human body, the material fact of corporeality.
