Frank Sinatra stars in this biography of Joe E. Lewis – one of the great entertainers of the twenties and latterly as a stand up comic in the forties through to the sixties. This after he was beaten almost to death and his face slashed and part of his tongue cut off by the gangsters who ran the joint he worked out of when he threatened to leave. Sinatras performance is one of his very best as an actor and the supporting cast – including Eddie Albert, Jackie Coogan and Mitzi Gaynor – are also very good.

The movie was written by Natalie Marcin and Isobel Lennart and directed by George Sidney. It won the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture. In 2001, Kevin Spacey purchased this Oscar statuette at a Butterfield & Butterfield auction and returned it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Anchors Aweigh was also nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Gene Kelly), Best Cinematography, Color (Robert Planck, Charles P. Boyle), Best Music, Song (for Jule Styne (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) for “I Fall in Love Too Easily”), and Best Picture.

The movie is famous for a musical number where Gene Kelly dances with Jerry the Mouse (the voice of Sara Berner). Kelly is live action while Jerry is animated. Tom the Cat appears briefly in the sequence as a butler. Originally, the producers wanted to use Mickey Mouse for this segment, but Walt Disney refused to allow his character to be used in an MGM film. Film buffs are still puzzled over Disney’s refusal to cooperate with MGM because Mickey Mouse had actually appeared with Jimmy Durante in MGM’s 1934 comedy Hollywood Party and Disney even produced a short Technicolor animated musical novelty for the same film.

The film offers rare glimpses of the MGM studio, including the Thalberg Building, the backlot, the commissary, and one of the soundstages, as well as an on-screen performance by the studio orchestra. There is also a memorable scene at the Hollywood Bowl, where Sinatra sings “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” after Iturbi and a group of young pianists have performed a spectacular arrangement of Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. In the audition scene with Iturbi, Grayson sings a special arrangement for soprano and orchestra of the waltz from Peter Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Many of the memorable scenes in this film were later featured in the That’s Entertainment tributes to MGM.

Quote:
For a small film, Suddenly has a lot of baggage. Even after many years, it remains tainted by its eerie foreshadowing of President Kennedy’s assassination nine years following the film’s release—an association made all the more sinister by the oft-repeated (and now disputed) assertion that Lee Harvey Oswald watched the film shortly before the President was gunned down in Dallas. Then there’s the claim that star Frank Sinatra ordered the film withdrawn from circulation after Kennedy was killed, an order Sinatra had no power to give, although he did protest when a TV station aired the film shortly after the 35th President’s death. In the Nineties, the film was the victim of a botched colorization effort that turned Sinatra into Old Brown Eyes, and the failure to renew the film’s copyright caused it to become available through multiple public domain distributors in inferior versions that were painful to watch.

Sinatra could never have predicted the film’s twisted path when he surprised everyone by choosing an obscure independent production as the follow-up to his Oscar-winning role in Columbia’s big budget From Here to Eternity. But Sinatra had something to prove. After years of playing song-and-dance men, he had been handed an Oscar for a dramatic role, but he still wasn’t taken seriously as an actor. Too many people thought he’d simply played himself as Private Maggio in Eternity. Sinatra wanted something so clearly different that there would be no question he was creating a character. John Baron, the former military man planning to assassinate the President of the United States (and mighty pleased about it), was about as far from Private Maggio as any role could be.

Suddenly was shot on a no-frills budget over four weeks in a small town outside of Los Angeles. The screenplay was the work of Richard Sale, a screenwriter and occasional director, and also a prolific writer of popular fiction, who understood the art of drawing characters in a few bold strokes. The director, Lewis Allen, had already begun the transition to TV, where his efficient craftsmanship would keep him working for the next twenty years on classic shows like Perry Mason, The Detectives and Bonanza. The result was a spare, tightly wound thriller that would have simply been a small town film noir classic, if it hadn’t experienced the good (or possibly bad) fortune of being freighted by history with cultural resonance far beyond anything its creators ever imagined.

None but the Brave, also known as Yūsha nomi (勇者のみ, None but the brave men) in Japan, is a 1965 war film with Frank Sinatra, Clint Walker, Tatsuya Mihashi, Tommy Sands and Brad Dexter. This is the only film directed by Frank Sinatra, and the first Japanese-American co-production.

Narrated in English by a Japanese officer named Kuroki (in the form of a journal he is writing for his wife), the film is set in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during an unspecified period of World War II. A platoon of 16 Japanese soldiers is stranded on an island in the Pacific with no means of communicating with the outside world. Lieutenant Kuroki keeps his men firmly in hand and is supervising the building of a boat for their escape.

An American C-47/R4D transport plane is shot down by a Japanese Zero, crash landing on the same island. The Zero and an American F4U Corsair destroy each other, with no outside commands learning of the island. Marine Aircraft Wing Captain Dennis Bourke assumes command of the platoon of Marines he was transporting, over their 2nd Lieutenant Blair and Sergeant Bleeker. Confidante to Bourke is Navy chief pharmacist’s mate Francis. As the 19 Americans learn of the Japanese platoon’s existence on the island, tension mounts resulting in a battle for the Japanese boat. The vessel is destroyed and a Japanese soldier is seriously injured. Calling a truce, Koruki trades the Americans access to water in exchange for a visit from their doctor to treat the wounded soldier, whose leg has to be amputated.

The truce results in both platoons, reduced in numbers through their earlier conflicts and later natural disasters, choosing to live side by side – although a line is drawn forbidding one from encroaching on the other’s side of the island. There is some clandestine cooperation and trading and earnest respect and friendship.

When the Americans establish radio contact and their pickup by a US naval vessel is arranged, they demand that the Japanese surrender, but Kuroki reestablishes that they are at war. As the Americans proceed to the beach, Bourke orders his men to be ready to shoot to kill. When they are ambushed by the remaining 8 men of the Japanese platoon, the remaining 11 Americans are given no option but to retaliate, resulting in a bloody and pointless firefight during which all the Japanese and most of the Americans are shot dead. Only Francis, Bourke, Bleeker, Blair and Corporal Ruffino survive the skirmish. Bourke orders Francis to examine the mortally wounded Kuroki to see if he can be saved. They move onto the beach and wait to be rescued by the American naval vessel, stationed just offshore. Francis reports Kuroki’s death and hands Bourke the Japanese officer’s journal, written in Japanese with what appears to be an address. Bourke speculates that one day he will be able to deliver it to Kuroki’s widow. Kuroki’s final narration calls what he is to do “just another day.” The film ends with a long shot of the island, superimposed with the words “Nobody ever wins.”
