Leslie, a talented ballerina, has been having an almost incestuous relationship with her mother’s lover for quite some time. Torn between sexual desire and disgust, Leslie’s relationship with the tyrannical and voluptuous Maurice soon weighs on the (actually only pro forma) relationship between Maurice and Francine. One day, Leslie’s salvation comes in the form of the restless, roughly the same-age performance artist Brian. When both young people fall in love with each other, Maurice reacts jealously and Leslie has to decide with whom she wants to stay.

The film starts with a dream sequence, wide-angled lens deformed characters, where the main actress, named Clara, is running away from male pleasure and taking refuge on a female companion and once again running away sensing in the female a reciprocal attraction.

The themes of the movie are the emancipation of women and the female pleasure, the breakdown of the typical family and its hypocritical values, brought forward by the sexually liberated youths influenced by the sexual revolution initiated in the States.

The movie portrays two social settings; on one side the old conservative patriarchal bourgeois family where the madonna mother figure, enclosed in the domestic space, is denied marital sexual pleasure so that order and control can be maintained in place and on the other side the sexually emancipated, fully ‘completed’ younger generation that lives their sexuality in the open, ‘under the sun’.

The film is very stereotypical in the treatment of generational differences and it is divided into four age groups.
The first age group is represented by the eldest woman, who is present in the film but only begs to be there, she wants to participate in this sexual education by offering money in exchange for sex.

Followed by the sexually asleep middle class woman, ten years younger, portrayed devoid of passions and self contained, who is charmed into physical pleasure by the politicized body of a young and attractive bay watcher.

The third age group is the bay watcher, representative of the rebellious youths, constituted in a communality of shared hedonistic goals, who ‘contaminate people with freedom’.

Then, the daughter, the youngest representative of the age groups, who is too young to go through the practice of sexual education, she is initiated by a coetaneous boy, himself a representative of ‘Baby Power’, into loving and preferring a modern cartoon character, Snoopy and to forget and demystify Mickey Mouse.

Stylistically the film is full of close ups, unusual angles and very colorful images. Some very fast cuts are used to give the cinematic sense of the comical and fast music is added to accompany the sequences and enhance the comedy feel.

The title of the film, Burn Boy Burn, is a phase that was first chanted by rioters in the Watts of Los Angeles in 1965. It is reminiscent of the Black Panther Party and the Black Power movement.

Synopsis:
The story follows the decadent heir Henri de Marsay, who becomes enamored of the eponymous beauty, Paquita Valdes, and plots to seduce her. He succeeds but becomes disillusioned when he discovers she is also involved with another lover and so plots to murder her. When he arrives to kill her, he discovers that she is already dead by the hand of her lover, his half-sister. She declares that Paquita came from a land where women are no more than chattels, able to be bought and used in any way. In the last lines of the story, de Marsay tells a friend that the girl has died of “something to do with the heart.”

When they talked to each other, the three leading actors were talking about ordinary things, not about their relationship. They never talked about their feelings. The story was shady, as it’s filled with missed attractions and hidden feelings. Actors were expressing themselves with moves, gestures and their contribution was fundamental for that. Only good actors could do that.

What I remembered of the film, its stark atmosphere and the special beauty of off-season Capri, superbly photographed, still held true for me. Also holding true was the stunning pretentiousness and Antoniennui (to borrow Andrew Sarris’ clever coinage) of the whole piece, like a directorial wet-dream inspired by the island sequences of “L’Avventura”. Mont-Dragon is probably the most obscure of the movies in which Jacques Brel starred. This goes for its current unavailability as well for its dark and filled with perversion plot. It’s a typical stylish movie of the beginning of the 70s, with many at-the-time shocking dialogues and situations that nowadays has become very much out-of-time and out of fashion, and with the recurrent aim to reveal the hidden dirty affairs of the bourgeoisie.

Biographers said that Brel himself was quite bored during the shooting, nonetheless it served him to gain more knowledge in making movies in view of its debut as a director. Surely his acting is a bit too emphasized, as his character, led by a sense of vengeance and hate, is totally detestable and thus very far from Brel’s attitude.

To confirm that this movie was at complete pace with its time, Mont-Dragon was a good box-office success, with more than 400.000 tickets sold only in the Parisian region, more than La Bande à Bonnot and Mon oncle Benjamin together (info taken fron Marc Robine’ biography on Jacques Brel).
