Detective Marco is assigned to investigate a murder that has occurred at an exclusive boarding school for adolescent girls. The victim is a popular, wealthy girl found strangled in her bed. The school director tells Marco she expects him to find the killer outside of the school, and she bristles at his insistent interrogations of the school staff and the students. Marco learns that two sadistic games were played the night of the murder and that the victim had been tied up. There are a number of suspects, including a teacher with an unnatural affection for one of the girls; a suspicious Spanish gentleman at the town-inn, and some of the pupils themselves.

Synopsis

Synopsis:
Paris, 1943. With the country still under Nazi occupation and commodities severely rationed, ordinary French people muddle through as best they can. Charles Michaud is a law-abiding man of impeccable morals who becomes duly anxious when he finds that his 17-year-old son Antoine has been regularly absconding from school. Little does he know that his wayward offspring has been busy engaging in black market activities with his friend Paul Tiercelin, so that he can earn enough money to keep his mistress Yvette in the manner to which she has grown accustomed.

To uncover what his son is up to, Charles confides his concerns in Paul’s father, the owner of a restaurant frequented by German officers that is supplied by black market produce. To deflect Charles’s attention from his son’s dubious exploits, Monsieur Tiercelin brings him into contact with Olga, a young woman of very easy virtue. Meanwhile, Antoine’s career as a black marketeer proves increasingly lucrative and the young man is soon taking delivery of a large consignment of champagne. The multi-part film is a difficult kind of cinema to get right but Duvivier’s Le Diable et les dix commandements is a rare exception where the form succeeds admirably. The film consists of seven roughly 15 minute sketches, each showing what may happen if one or more of the Ten Commandments is broken. Each sketch is self-contained (except for the last which returns to the first) and linked by a nasty slithery serpent who has a very strange sense of humour. The sketches are either mini-dramas, usually with a clever twist at the end (the best instance of this being the second sketch: “Do not commit adultery”), or comic. The sketch featuring “Do no steal” is an outrageous comic farce with Jean-Claude Brialy and Louis de Funès, made even more hilarious by Duvivier’s unsubtle attempt to ape the New Wave film directors.

The cast list for the film reads like a section of Who’s Who of French cinema, with no less than a dozen luminaries of the 1940s and 1950s, including: Fernandel, Danielle Darrieux, Michel Simon and Lino Ventura, not to mention the incomparable de Funès. Not content with established acting talent, Duvivier also embraces up and coming stars, including Jean-Claude Brialy, Charles Aznavour and a very young Alain Delon. This variety of acting talent is also mirrored in the variety in the seven sketches, showing how incredibly versatile a director Duvivier was. What is so remarkable is how well Duvivier uses his star-studded cast: not one character appears out of place. Although most of the actors are on screen for a few minutes, you cannot help remembering their contribution long after the film has finished.

The film is rich in unforgettable little moments, but the absolute highlight is the final scene, in particular the expression on Michel Simon’s face when he thinks he has killed the Devil.

Overall, this is an entertaining film which exploits the multi-part formula with unparalleled panache and originality. It is not in the league of Duvivier’s earlier great films, but it is nonetheless an entirely satisfying and memorable film. To top it all, the film very nearly achieves the impossible feat of reconciling the past and future directions of French cinema at its most effervescent period.– James Travers

Pierre Chenal’s last hurrah-although not his last movie, it’s easily the best of the four thrillers he made when he was back from Argentina. “Jeux Dangereux” the precedent year suggested a return to form for a director who made interesting film noirs in the thirties and a masterpiece in the forties (“La Foire Aux Chimères”). All promises were fulfilled in “La Bete A L’Affut” .

There are two apparently distinct plots:
– A cop’s widow (Françoise Arnoul) is through with love and she spends her time collecting money for the orphans of the Police, abetted by a bunch of snobs and false friends. Unfortunately the person who was in charge of the money is assaulted and the money is gone. Might this respectable notable of the town be the stealer, after feigning an aggression?

– A warden has two inmates do some repairs in his house. But he’s got a too pretty wife. Two of the men are killed in mysterious circumstances and the survivor, one of the prisoners (Henri Vidal) takes refuge in the widow’s desirable mansion. Love begins to grow between them but is the man a victim of fate as he claims to be?

The screenplay is particularly smart as the two stories meet in the last minutes. There’s also a grandiose finale in a lighthouse, with scenes to rival the best of Jacques Tourneur. Henri Vidal was perhaps never better than here and his pairing with sexy Françoise Arnoul was really a good one.The last scene was particularly harrowing when you know that Vidal was to pass away in December 1959, leaving Belmondo and Delon a clear field.
