1 – Manoela

In Portugal, Joaquim de Costabella, a deposed marquis, lives with his pious granddaughter Manoëla. When banker Alvarez comes to ask for Manoëla’s hand in exchange for renewing his drafts, the marquis throws him out. That same night, Alvarez’s house is burglarized and murdered…

2 – Le secret de Madame Stefan/Madame Stefan’s secret

Parisette, a pretty dancer at the Paris Opera and the living image of Manoëla, lives with her uncle Cogolin, a waiter at the Stefan bank. Cogolin is a good friend of Madame Stefan, an ex-employee of the bank. He helps her hide a secret: a little girl she’s having raised by a wet nurse.

3 – L’affaire de Neuilly/The Neuilly affair

Binoclard, dressed in Cogolin’s uniform, breaks into the home of a wealthy woman in Neuilly. Cogolin and Madame Stefan visit little Lulu. In the evening, the two crooks celebrate their crime, while Parisette, invited to dance at the Stefans’, meets the Marquis de Costabella, troubled by her resemblance to the deceased Manoëla…

4 – L’enquête/The investigation

Back home, Cogolin tells Parisette who his father was. Binoclard, who has come to rest Cogolin’s suit, overhears everything and steals the letters proving Parisette’s parentage. The next day, the police visit the Stefans: a button from a recipe boy’s jacket has been found next to the body of a Neuilly pensioner…

5 – La piste/The trail
Quote:
The police go through Cogolin’s belongings and find evidence of his guilt. Parisette is distraught. On the banks of the Marne, Lapusse and Binoclard are having a drunken feast. Lapusse, taking advantage of his clerk’s inebriated state, pushes him into the water. The police tell Stefan the results of their investigation…

6 – Grand-père/Grandpa
Quote:
At the police station, the police question Parisette. The Marquis, warned by Stefan, picks her up and takes her to his home. Cogolin, camouflaged under a bandage and penniless, wanders around Marseille. He rescues a Portuguese loan shark named Alvarez. Alvarez offers him hospitality, only to discover Cogolin’s identity in the newspaper…

7 – Le faux révérend/The false reverend
Quote:
Cogolin, disguised as a priest, is now living with Alvarez in Nice. Alvarez, learning that the Marquis de Costabella is also on the Côte d’Azur, pays him a visit. But he is thrown out. He then asks Cogolin to break into the Marquis’s home as a “clergyman”…

8 – Family House
Quote:
Cogolin, disguised as a woman, takes refuge in a boarding house. There, he is surprised to see Lapusse, the owner’s new partner. He also meets Mélanie Parent, to whom he confides. She decides to help him. Their suspicions fall on Lapusse, who has spoken to the young woman about “family jewels”. They set a trap for him…

9 – L’impasse/The dead end

Cogolin catches up with Lapusse and is about to take him to the police station. But Lapusse reminds him that Madame Stefan’s secret will then be revealed. Cogolin throws him off a bridge onto the rocks. Stefan, who has seen everything, takes Cogolin to a café. But Cogolin is arrested by the police…

10 – Le triomphe de Cogolin/Cogolin’s triumph

Stefan confesses to Parisette that he has never loved his wife and wants a divorce. Madame Stefan has heard it all. Lapusse, at death’s door, signs his confession to the police, while Mélanie, little Lulu, Juliette, Parisette and the Marquis meet at the police station to tell the truth…

11 – La fortune de Joaquim/Joaquim’s fortune
Quote:
While Alvarez reveals to Cogolin and Stefan the mystery surrounding the Marquis’s fortune, the latter leaves on a mysterious trip to Portugal with Candido. Parisette discovers a strange card written by Manoëla just before her death. Intrigued, she asks Maria about her grandfather…

12 – Le secret des Costabella/The Costabella secret

The Marquis brings back crates of gold from Lisbon by boat, unbeknownst to customs officials. He arrives in Nice to a frosty reception, with everyone believing him guilty. Discovering Alvarez’s presence, Joaquim demands explanations. He is then forced to tell where his fortune comes from…

Rudolph Strelitz, known as ‘Barrabas’, is the brutal leader of an underground gang who causes mayhe [dropcap][/dropcap]m and destruction to the lives of civilized people. A lawyer, Claude Varèse, is strongly determined to bring Strelitz to justice for the purpose of revenge, after his father was wrongly guillotined for the murder of Laure d’Hérigny, a mistress of a missing American millionaire. Later Claude Varèse’s sister, Françoise, is then abducted by the evil Dr Lucius, one of Barrabas’ henchmen.
