Francesca Comencini tells the story of her special relationship with her father Luigi, master of Italian cinema, at the most difficult moment of her life. “First life, then cinema” are the words that Luigi speaks to Francesca on the set of Pinocchio, a sentence that is a little like the soul of the film and an omen of the dramatic moments to come that they will have to face together, as father and daughter, sealing a very strong relationship.

With modesty but great courage, Francesca talks about a pivotal moment in her life, between adolescence and adulthood. We are in 1969, the images of the Piazza Fontana massacre, the episode that inaugurated the long season of terrorism, are on TV; Francesca isn’t even 10 years old and her father, played by Fabrizio Gifuni, browses with her the book illustrated by Collodi with the adventures of the famous puppet. The story tells us that Comencini had been working on the idea for years and the filmmaker shows us a moment in the creative process of a great craftsman of cinema. We are then thrown onto the chaotic set, where Luigi seems like a lion tamer in a circus.

Later, high school student Francesca, a sympathiser of the radical left, is in full conflict with her father. Heroin is spreading in Rome and our protagonist also gives in to drugs, and is no longer able to hide it from a helpless father who had put his trust in his daughter. A boy that Francesca dates dies of an overdose and, desperate, she throws herself onto the coffin at the funeral. To save his daughter’s life, Luigi decides to ignore all his cinematic projects and to leave for Paris with her, where Francesca, carefully watched over by her father, will slowly and painfully take the path of detoxification. At Luigi’s first Parkinson’s symptoms, the roles are reversed, and it is she who takes care of her father.

Weird as hell but strangely compelling, Davide Manuli’s The Legend of Kaspar Hauser reenvisions the German youth’s story as a fable existing outside any recognizable reality and revolving around magic, dope, and thumping dance music. With Vincent Gallo hamming his way through not one but two roles, the cult-courting film will be catnip for Gallomaniacs. But the real star is Silvia Calderoni, a stage actress making her apparent film debut in the title role.

Shot in B&W on the isle of Sardinia, Legend offers a stark, out-of-time village whose many age-old buildings are inhabited by just a half-dozen characters. Gallo plays two: a constantly muttering Sheriff, with stringy blonde hair and a short fuse, and The Pusher, an enigma dressed in all-white motorcycle gear whose role in the community is not explained beyond his name.

The mysterious Hauser (referred to as a boy, though played by a flat-chested woman) washes up on the beach, almost dead, with big headphones on his ears and his name emblazoned on his naked torso. The Sheriff, who somehow anticipated Kaspar’s arrival, brings the boy home and teaches him tricks: juggling oranges, for instance, and DJing. (For the island’s “Duchess,” Kaspar bangs his head against the wall repeatedly. “He’s very talented,” she declares. “Yeah, he’s a special boy,” the Sheriff replies.) At all times, Kaspar’s headphones remain on — connected to no music source, though the boy contorts to the beat of unheard dancefloor rhythms.

Using disconnected scenes to sketch out a just-barely-comprehensible narrative, Manuli delights in weird moments that sometimes play as parodies of ’60s art and ’70s cult cinema (complete with a strangely disfigured man playing the local priest’s servant boy) and often seem intended solely for chemically-altered midnight audiences. Few sequences try the skeptical viewer’s patience, though, and many entertain in their own way — while Gallo lays his performance on thick, he’s frequently upstaged by Calderoni’s singular, beat-of-another-drummer physical presence.

Just don’t ask what any of it — especially bookending shots in which Gallo does Saturday Night Fever moves while UFOs zoom overhead — means. – The Hollywood Reporter

Synopsis
Freak and Jajà are in a place with no date and time. A no man’s world. The earth is no longer inhabited by man, but on rare occasions a strange survivor or two will appear. The two protagonists who have never met, meet at Bus stop in the middle of nowhere. The Bus arrives but doesn’t stop, it was the Bus that was going to GODOT, the God which manifested itself through a musical sound on the other side of the mountain. So Freak and Jajà decide to look for him on foot, in this way embarking on a journey that will have them meet the bizarre characters living on this land. Unfortunately Freak and Jajà at the end of their journey… will meet up with death before reaching their God.
