One morning Jun (Mizutani Yutaka) gets into an angry argument with his father (Uchida Ryohei) over his girlfriend (Harada Mieko) whom his father disapproves of. In a fit of bloody rage, Jun kills his father. He decides to turn himself into the police, but his mother (Ichihara Etsuko) stops him. Eerily calm after the shock, she suggests that they dispose of the body, and then move to another place where no one will know them. When Jun moves the body out of the house, his mother suddenly changes moods again and points a knife at him.

Quote:
Hasegawa Kazuhiko has only directed two films in the last thirty years. But in Hasegawa’s case, that is enough to put him in the league of Japan’s finest filmmakers. Grappling controversial topics and delivering with a terrifying intensity, Hasegawa’s films are impossible to forget. His 1979 cult film The Man Who Stole the Sun hit Japanese cinema much like the bomb that its troubled protagonist constructed, while his masterful 1976 debut Seishun no Satsujinsha tells a haunting story of bloody patricide. Adapted from a Nakagami Kenji novel which was itself based on a true story, Seishun no Satsujinsha (a.k.a. Young Murderer) takes the familiar problems of youth apathy, generation conflict, and domestic violence to a shocking conclusion. Hasegawa cuts no corners with the realistic, emotionally brutal scenes of murder, and Mizutani Yutaka and Ichihara Etsuko both give amazing performances.

A somber, visually distilled, and deeply affecting portrait of the human toll and uncalculated tragedy of nuclear holocaust. In contrast to Shohei Imamura’s characteristically unrefined, primitivistic, and subversively bawdy cinema, the film is shot in high contrast black and white, creating a spare and tonally muted chronicle of dignity, survival, community, and human resilience. Through recurring literal and figurative images of regression, Imamura conveys a dual meaning, not only in the community’s noble attempt to rebuild Hiroshima and return to a semblance of normal life after the annihilating bombing but also in their collective gradual and systematic erasure from Japanese society through long-term effects of radiation sickness, infertility, cultural (and geographic) isolation, and social stigmatization.

The black rain in the title refers to the combination of ash, radioactive fallout, and water that fell one or two hours after the explosion. There have been other books and films about the dropping of the atomic bomb but none as unique and powerful as this one. Based on a novel by Masuji Ibuse who gathered information from interviews and the diaries of real-life bomb victims, the film depicts how an entire family is affected psychologically as well as physically by the bomb years after the original explosion. It is a horrifying vision but one that resonates with deep compassion for humanity.
