A 1994 biographical film about the life and career of the Italian opera singer Farinelli, considered one of the greatest castrato singers of all time. It stars Stefano Dionisi as Farinelli and was directed by the Belgian director Gérard Corbiau.
Although Dionisi provided the speaking voice, Farinelli’s singing voice was provided by the Polish soprano, Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.

Raul Ruiz’s Love Torn in a Dream is introduced with a fake newsreel, taking place in postwar France, in which the cast of the film meet with the producer, who explains the film’s complex weave of nine narratives. A diagram in which each story is represented by a letter of the alphabet explicates the intertwining of the nine tales. As the producer explains each actor’s role, the film begins. The stories, rooted in folklore, bump up against each other as the film leaps back in forth in time. They involve a jewel stolen from a painting, a mirror that “steals” what it reflects, a seminary student who dresses as a priest to hear the nuns’ confessions, brothers who combat each other in their search for a group of rings, a man whose everyday life is predicted by a website 24 hours in advance, a Catholic who finds out he’s really Jewish, and a treasure map that leads to a pirate’s chest. Each of the main cast members plays multiple roles. Ruiz veterans Melvil Poupaud and Elsa Zylberstein play the lead roles, while Lambert Wilson, Christian Vadim, Diogo Dória, José Meireles, and Rogério Samora play supporting roles.

It’s delicate, mysterious business, starting with the reason Juliette was locked up for 15 years, and I won’t spoil it here. You need only know that the sisters are trying to heal old wounds. Zylberstein is deeply touching as a woman who doesn’t know what to do in the face of the older sister she partially fears and unconditionally loves. Claudel, making an uncommonly impressive debut in films, gives the story the psychological underpinnings of a play by Anton Chekhov, the Russian author whose works famously presented major emotions in a minor key, finding hard nuggets of truth in the small details of everyday life. It’s probably coincidence that Scott Thomas is currently the toast of Broadway as Arkadina, the whirling, contradictory center of Chekhov’s The Seagull. But her Juliette is Chekhovian down to the character’s bruised soul. The transcendent Scott Thomas, alert to every nuance from comic to tragic, should be on the march to Oscar. There aren’t many performances you can call flawless. This one is. Scott Thomas and her movie are some kind of miracle.
