Following Romm’s untimely death during the making of …And Still I Believe, his former students Khutsiev and Klimov completed this remarkable film montage, a personal journey across 20th-century history and the clash of civilizations told, in part, through Romm’s own diary entries and gripping historical footage.

Originally called World ’68, later retitled The World of Today Romm’s film was conceived as an impassioned, large-scale essay on the origins of the 20th century and the subsequent reality the disappointed director felt slipping away from him. The film itself slipped away from him and was left unfinished at the time of his death. His younger colleagues, Marlen Khutsiev, Elem Klimov and German Lavrov, completed the film from the elements he left behind in addition to segments from Ordinary Fascism, closing the film with Romm’s ultimately optimistic outlook: “And still I believe that man is sensible…”

Born in 1901, Mikhail Romm took part in the Bolshevik Revolution, the Civil War, and World War II. His landmark films Nine Days of One Year (1961) and Ordinary Fascism (1965) embodied the intellectual discourse and discontent of the 1960s, influencing an entire generation of Thaw filmmakers, including Andrei Tarkovsky, G. N. Chukhrai, Marlen Khutsiev, and Elem Klimov.

Ivan Got His Gun. Sam Fuller once declared that the only way for cinema to depict war authentically was to spray the audiences with real bullets, here’s the next best thing. The setting is the Nazi devastation of Belarus, the Exodus and the Apocalypse are the main poles: The 12-year-old protagonist (Alexei Kravchenko) digs up a rifle and eagerly runs to join the partisans in the woods, Elem Klimov proceeds to wipe the smile off the wannabe warrior’s face. Left behind, the boy spends an incongruous idyll with a forest nymph (Olga Mironova), complete with rainbows materializing out of morning rain; a squashed bird’s nest sets the stage for the inferno, which is first glimpsed — casually, mind-scarringly — by the side of a cabin. Bombs and bottles rain from the sky, Klimov’s Steadicam skims supernaturally pale meadows, a full menagerie (stork, cow, lemur, lobster) adds to the surrealism. The sound design is an assaultive combo of shrieks, moans, detonations, and the hum of a ruptured eardrum (with “selections by Mozart”), Kravchenko attempts to escape it by jamming his head into the mud (“Didn’t I tell you not to dig,” the living corpse asks). It builds to the barbarous spectacle of the villagers scratching at the walls as the church they’ve been crammed into is set ablaze by the raucous Germans, and to the boy’s terror-wizened face as he’s forced to pose with pistol to temple for a snapshot (the photographer takes his sweet time winding the camera). The youngster’s gaze becomes its own camera, helplessly recording every horror in cinema’s most draining vision of the Abyss. Brueghel, Guernica, Rousseau’s La Guerre; Dovzhenko’s frenzies are remembered (the gassed soldier’s cackling in Arsenal), Kubrick’s numb survivor “in a world of shit” is foreseen. The “revulsion of the mind and exhaustion of the spirit” Ernie Pyle wrote of are lent bludgeoning viscera by Klimov, who pointedly refuses to soothe trauma with catharsis — Hitler is the grimacing slime effigy and the “liberator” portrait, but also the toddler perched on his mother’s knee, daring you to bring your hatred to his level. Cinematography by Aleksei Radionov.

Description:
A comedy about a young dentist, who becomes well-known in his town but suddenly loses faith in himself.

(imdb review)

A masterful, pro-elitist, Tatiesque film from Elem Klimov, 22 April 2006

Author: Niffiwan from Toronto, Canada
This is story about a dentist with the talent of painlessly extracting teeth, and what happens to him as a result of being naturally good at his job. It is told with humour (much of it quite subtle, almost surreal, and in the background – imagine a street scene where everyone on the sidewalk on one side of the road walks in just one direction, and on the other side in the other), poignancy, and a frequent breaking of the 4th wall between the movie and the audience (think of what happens in Shakespeare’s plays, and you’ll be close). It also features some songs by Novella Matveyeva, a famous Russian singer-songwriter (her songs are sung by the leading actress).

Without revealing the details of the plot, I will just say this: this film is not very friendly to Communist ideology. One should not take that to mean, as some critics have, that it is simply a metaphor for Klimov’s own experiences as a filmmaker, or that its criticism applies to Communism alone. To do that would be to miss the point. The film’s final message (that society inevitably ostracizes those who are gifted) applies to all societies everywhere. It cannot be any other way – the gifted people in any society are, by definition, significantly outnumbered. In light of this, the film could be called a pro-elitist one.

The message is something that some (the “Dilberts” of the world) will inherently understand and love the film for, and others will find repellent – the audience that I was watching it with did not seem to like this film as much as Klimov’s earlier “Welcome, or No Trespassing”, which was in essence more-or-less a harmless kids’ film. “Adventures of a Dentist” is not a kids’ film. It requires a certain amount of wisdom about how the world works to understand, and its humour is quite clearly aimed at a higher level (although it is by no means less funny).

In the end, the film gives those who are receptive something quite serious to think about. This is without a doubt one film that I will remember, both for its all-too-rare brand of humour and its very relevant message. It is only a shame that as far as I can tell, this film is not available anywhere on DVD. It was only released in less than 100 theatres in the USSR (some say just 25), so it is not nearly as well-known as it ought to be. Despite this, I hope that some of the interest in Klimov’s more famous film “Come and See” will rub off on his other films, and somebody will put this out on DVD eventually.

What makes an athlete compete? How can he be made to endure the gruelling training most sports require? In this image-rich combination documentary and poetic drama, participants in sports including foot-racing, wrestling, speed-skating, swimming and gymnastics are seen in their daily lives and in all stages of training and competition. Their regimens are contrasted with the efforts of ordinary people to train some life into their limbs as they exercise to lose weight, or, as aging people, in order to stay active. In one episode, a marathon runner competing on a hot summer day in Philadelphia literally runs himself to death, and in a later dramatic re-enactment, medieval warriors hold a competitive joust. As one image piles upon another in this unique film, answers to questions about competition begin to suggest themselves.
