Quote:
The spirit of Resnais runs deep in this existential melodrama. A young woman on a mountaineering holiday is accused of murdering her husband. Tied to a mountain between her brutalising spouse and her secret lover, disaster strikes. To prevent all three from plunging to their deaths, the woman is forced to choose between cutting her husband’s rope or that of her lover…

An elliptical narrative structure shot in Masumura’s trademark ‘scope explores dark themes of gender, guilt and voyeurism in this blistering film.

“Probably Masumura’s greatest film.” Jonathan Rosenbaum, Film Comment

“One of Japanese cinema’s most striking portraits of a modern woman.” James Quandt , Ontario Cinematheque

Review from The Montreal Gazette – Jan 10, 1970
BEAST ALLEY – directed by Eizo Sugawa; original Japanese version with English subtitles; at the Art Cinema

The only real beast in Beast Alley is a black and white Great Dane, who is incidental to the plot. There are, however, a lot of humans who behave in a rather beastly manner.

There’s a frustrated wife who burns her decrepit husband; an evil old man who preys on unhappy young women; a sinister villain who plays with gasoline and matches; and a host of unscrupulous, corrupt politicians and police detectives.

This may make the movie sound like an English or Hollywood detective thriller from the ‘forties, and actually, Beast Alley isn’t far removed from that genre. The scene is a little different; but other than that, one can’t think that he’s bee through this movie before.

Which is not to say that the film doesn’t work. The plot flows smoothly and the director Sugawa keeps things pretty tense. But anybody who goes to Japanese movies to see furious sword fights is bound to be disappointed.
Beast Alley owes more to Mickey Spillane than to the seven samurai.

In 1966, Mikio Naruse made two films that featured elements of the suspense/thriller genre. According to IMDb, The Stranger Within a Woman came first in January. Then in April, this film was released

Here’s Michael Kerpan’s review of the film:
In Naruse’s next to last film, he returned to cinemascope format, but stayed with black and white film. This is once again, in terms of plot, a bit of a shocker. Soon after we meet Kuniko (a young widow, played by Hideko Takamine) and her much-beloved young only son, the boy is run over by Kinuko (played by Yoko Tsukasa the rich spoiled wife of an automobile executive). Kinuko, it turns out, was distracted at the time of the accident because her companion in the car, a hunkish younger man who is her lover, had just told her of his plan to soon begin a far-away job. Kinuko tells her husband of the accident (but not the precipitating cause), and he orders the corporate chauffeur (Yutaka Sada, who was also the unfortunate chauffeur in “High and Low”). Luckily for him, he gets off with a small fine and a suspended sentence.
Kuniko is disgusted, and while drowning her post-trial sorrows at a bar with her yakuza-ish younger brother, overhears an old lady discussing the accident with her friends, mention that “lady drivers are so dreadful”. As it turns out, the old lady was an eyewitness — and can describe the real hit and run driver. However, because the case has already been satisfactorily closed, the police take no interest in the story of Kuniko and her witness. Consequently, Kuniko decides to seek revenge on her own. She wangles her way into the executive’s household as a temporary domestic servant – and because she is so devoted, soon gets hired as a live-in maid, on a more permanent basis. While there, she fantasizes methods of taking revenge against the rich couple’s son (almost the same age as her own dead one). Kuniko actually makes a few furtive (but thwarted) attempts to carry out her plan of revenge against the boy. But, as she grows increasingly fond of him, she wonders whether she shouldn’t take revenge directly against his guilty mother instead. Meanwhile, Kinuko is growing increasingly distraught over the impending departure of her lover.

Since this is a suspense thriller, I’ll refrain from discussing the plot further.
This film is unique in Naruse’s output in that it not only makes frequent use of flashbacks (far more common in these late films than in earlier ones), but also actually depicts Kuniko’s fantasies (these are shown in very bright, very whitened tones). This technique turns out to be crucial in deciphering what actually happens at the climax of the film. It would seem that Takanine was not entirely comfortable with her part in this film as, from time to time, she resorts to more generic acting than was her norm. Not an entirely successful film, by any means, but nonetheless quite an interesting one.

Synopsis:
A feverishly perverse 1969 film noir oddity starring female impersonator Akihiro Maruyama. When wealthy Kyohei hires singer “Black Rose” to perform in his exclusive men’s club, he gets more than he bargains for when she attracts scores of homicidal past lovers. The film takes a bizarre twist when Kyohei’s son falls victim to the femme fatale’s unique charm.

Review:
If there was a touch of Seijun Suzuki about Blackmail Is My Life, there’s something of Yasuzo Masumura about Black Rose Mansion’s romantic melodrama with a touch of perversity. Based on a play by Yukio Mishima, who worked with Fukasaku the previous year on an Edogawa Rampo story for Black Lizard (1968), the story’s horror-suspense elements would also seem to bear some of Rampo’s Edgar Allan Poe influences. When combined with Fukasaku’s garishly colourful and typically over-the-top treatment, the whole thing takes on an outlandish quality all of its own.

Centred around the ambiguous figure of Ryuko Fujio (Akihiro Maruyama), a mysterious, glamorous singer discovered in Yokohama by an associate of Mr. Sako (Eitaro Ozawa), the film couldn’t fail to be anything but larger than life. A successful businessman and manager of an exclusive club, The Black Rose Mansion, Sako hires this exotic creature to perform each night for him and soon falls under her spell. The mysterious nature of her background and her comings and goings only add to her allure, but Ryuko seems immune to the approaches of the most influential men in society, be they writers or politicians.

Ryuko however is waiting for her true love and carries around a black rose wherever she goes in the belief that it will turn red when she finds the right man. Each night however, strange men turn up at the club, figures from Ryuko’s forgotten past, their lives devastated by their encounters with this strange, seductive and enigmatic woman. When Sako’s wayward son Wataru (Masakazu Tamura) returns home, it complicates matters further for both the businessman and his exclusive singer.

What actress could possibly carry such charisma to play Ryuko Fujio? None, obviously. In a film where the illusion is more important that the reality, what better way then to cast the role than through a female impersonator? It’s an inspired touch that is eerily disturbing and all the more so since there is no M. Butterfly moment of revelation (or self-denial) anywhere in Black Rose Mansion. The absurdity and perversity of the overheated emotions this gives rise to is afforded an additional twist through the overwrought production design and Fukasaku’s exaggerated mise-en-scène, the Black Rose Mansion achieving romantic grotesquery through the incongruity of placing these peculiarly Japanese figures within an absurd European-influenced Neo-classical setting with Art Nouveau décor, one that bears all the hallmarks of Mishima’s occidental-influenced writing, particularly his trashier work. The film finally topples under the weight of all this nonsense with a scarlet paint splattered bloody finale, and not before time.
