Don Murray stars as a humble cowboy with aspirations for bigger things. He borrows money from his dance-hall girlfriend Lee Remick to buy a ranch, then dumps Remick in favor of banker’s daughter Patricia Owens. Murray runs for political office, and in so doing is compelled to join a posse in search of his best friend Stuart Whitman, who has turned rustler. Anxious not to compromise his climb to the top, Murray stands by in silence as Whitman is lynched. In the end, however, Murray regains his essential decency when he is shot while trying to protect his ex-girlfriend Remick from bullying land baron Richard Egan. Based on a novel by A. B. Guthrie Jr., These Thousand Hills may look and sound like a western, but it has “film noir” written all over it. – Hal Erickson

A good and somewhat unusual Western that at times seems to be channeling the spirit of film noir, These Thousand Hills nevertheless falls short of being the great film it wants to be. Again, Hills is a good film, definitely worth watching — but just as definitely not a great film. Part of the problem is that Hills seems to want to be a frontier epic, but it simply lacks the size and the grandeur that is required. Sure, there are wide open spaces and some panoramic vistas, but they feel like “extras” rather than an integral, necessary component of Hills. The story keeps trying to be bigger and grander, but at heart it’s small — a story about the soul of a man, rather than the soul of the country. As that man, Don Murray is part of the problem. His performance is fine, more than perfectly acceptable and effective — but at the same time, less than soul-searching. The actor is playing a role rather than being the character, and that discrepancy is noticeable. As his real love, Lee Remick is exceptional, a performance that is quietly luminous. Stuart Whitman is very good as Murray’s buddy and Richard Egan does well with the rather-on-enote role of the heavy. Richard Fleischer’s direction is professional and at times imaginative; if he lacks the vision to make Hills the bigger picture it wants to be, he stills turns out an engaging and at times intriguing character study.

Synopsis:
When cowboy Beau and his friend Virgil take the bus from Montana to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in the rodeo, Beau is also hoping to find his “angel”. There, virginal Beau falls in love with cafe singer “hillbilly” Chérie performing “That Old Black Magic” and plans to take her back to Montana. The next day, he intends to marry her after the rodeo, but she escapes. She wants to go Hollywood, where she hopes to be discovered. But Beau tracks her down, and forces her on the bus back to Montana. On the way, they stop at Grace’s Diner. Synopsis:
The naive cowboy Tod Lohman accidentally kills the son of the powerful land baron Hunter Boyd. Tod runs for his life, pursued by the dead man’s vengeful brothers. Tod shelters on the ranch of Amos Bradley and he falls in love with his daughter Juanita. However, Tod is concerned that he’ll eventually have to leave when his pursuers catch up with him.

Review:
Visually stunning in CinemaScope. Henry Hathaway (“Kiss of Death”/”The Sons of Katie Elder”/”Call Northside 777”) capably directs this quality Western. The literate parable-like script by Wendell Mayes and Robert Buckner is based on the book The Hell-Bent Kid by Charles O. Locke. The ending is meaningful and well-done, though Hollywood changed the book’s tragic ending to a happy one. In the final vendetta confrontation scene between the victim’s father and the accused, it suggests the power there is in forgiveness.

Tod Lohman (Don Murray) is a naive ranch-hand cowboy, who by accident murders one of the sons of the powerful rancher Hunter Boyd (R. G. Armstrong) and in a state of panic goes on the run from the vengeful father and his other sons. Tom Boyd (Dennis Hopper) is the posse leader. Amos Bradley (Chill Wills) is the kindly rancher sympathetic to Tod, who gives him shelter. Juanita Bradley (Diane Varsi) is the tomboy daughter of Amos, who falls in love with Tod.
