Based on a traditional African tale.
A king has the habit of listening to the wishes of his people whilst walking in disguise on the streets of his kingdom. One day he overhears two brothers daydreaming of marrying the king’s daughters, even if it meant being beheaded one year later. The weddings take place and one of the brothers is decapitated one year later. The other one escapes at his wife’s insistence. On a long journey full of surprising incidents our hero becomes king of a village, with wives and subjects. But his earlier promise haunts him, and in order to save his family he accepts to be sacrificed.

Saitane, meaning Satan, is the story of a young couple whose wife is seduced by a wealthy merchant. His secret love will be organized by a marabout. Quarrel in the household. The father of the young woman wants to take her daughter and grand-son, but the husband is opposed because he considers his property. As the marabout, he will be punished, ridiculed and lose its influence on the village. He will find a cure for his discomfiture in suicide. Oumarou Ganda denounced once again with this film in color, religious hypocrisy as he lambasted Le Wazzou Polygame fetish and occult beliefs as being dupes and rewarding crooks in Africa. So it turns ostensibly a mockery marabout, although sowing discord in households, was revered of all in his village. Saitane is a remarkable picture of manners and excellent social satire.
