Quote:
If you ever wanted to understand the debate about the independence of Québec, this is likely the best documentary made on the subject. Sadly, it comes without subtitle. A few may find it somewhat demagogical… it mostly is once it enter the popular opinion, the average man take on it. But the politicians are also abhorrent and you hear it loud and clear. Those against it are very vocal, screaming anger and anguish, always yelling. Using the same scare tactics that always are used to defeat the opposition. Showing it to be dangerous, irrealistic, etc. Even, as a testament to how little have changed, taking the oil price as a measure of achievement, saying Canada have it the cheapest and that the independence of Québec would double it’s price.

So, it’s demagogical on both sides but you can’t help, even if you are against the independence of Québec, to feel disgust for the kind of arguements used against it. There is basically no way to be in favor of those colonised pricks, especially the clown that is Jean Chrétien. He was basically yelling: “I’m an idiot, I use english and french at the same time, watch me, I’m your future”… and indeed, he was our future and became the PM of Canada. I think both Canada and Québec would have been better countries divided than together. I even have a hard time understanding why the rest of Canada can disagree so wholeheartedly.

One of my favorite scene have Greeks working-class people speaking english and saying they will vote Yes… Saying the No is the capitalist option. “I can understand I’m not suppose to go with the Boss and the Capitalists who all tell me to vote No”

There is however a good argument against it from an immigrant social worker… which emerge from a perception of racism within the nationalist movement. It’s stronger than anything the politicians may have said. Recycling the far-right France slogan “La France aux français” for “Le Québec aux québécois”, that’s obviously a naive and one-dimensional approach that have played against the movement through out it’s history. I can agree with this person, so far as her perception hold true for a few extremists within the movement and may well appear scary to the immigrants.

The rationalization of a man like René Lévesque are very hard to argue, that is why the opposition had to act like raving-maniacs and scream bloody murder. If you seperate, you will die, there will be no more food on the table, no more gas to run your car, no more job, old folks will be left to die in the gutter, no more nothing. You don’t want to die, do you?

The whole of the movie play on parallel with quotes of “The Prince” of Machiavelli. Which work flawlessly, but is one of the part that make it play against it’s objectivity.

After a raucous visit from the wealthy Uncle Arthur (The Death of a Lumberjack’s J. Léo Gagnon), working class Montreal couple Roland (O.K. … Laliberté’s René Caron) and Berthe (Mustang’s Luce Guilbeault) are left feeling slighted by his meager gift of $500. Hungry for more, Berthe hatches a plan to descend on Uncle Arthur’s remote country house and steal his small fortune with the help of her delinquent brother and cousin. When the robbery spirals out of control, allegiances shift, blood is spilled, and Roland’s dimwitted lodger Ernest (J.A. Martin Photographer’s Marcel Sabourin) takes center stage in a harrowing battle for Arthur’s stolen cash.

Three decades before winning the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions, Denys Arcand started his fiction filmmaking career with an informal trilogy (Dirty Money, Réjeanne Padovani, and Gina) that remains the high-water mark for Canadian crime cinema. Loosely inspired by the B-movies of the ’40s, while anticipating Blood Simple and other neo-noirs of the ’80s, Dirty Money is an unforgettable blend of pastiche and provocation. Shot through with pitch black humor and grounded by a cavalcade of memorable performances, Arcand’s fiction debut announced the arrival of a major Canadian filmmaking talent.

With Pierre, she takes part in a boozy initiation, and the romance culminates in an endless series of kisses that goes on until the first snow.

Gina (Céline Lomez), a Montreal striptease dancer, is sent by her agency to small-town Louisville to give a show at a local hotel. Also arriving in Louisville that same day are Bob Sauvageau (Claude Blanchard), leader of a gang of snowmobilers known as “Les Pinguins,” and a director (Gabriel Arcand) and a small crew of filmmakers from the Office National du Cinéma who are making a film on the oppressive working conditions at the local textile factory (a reference to Arcand’s own NFB-banned documentary On est au coton). The friendly relationship that is established between Gina and the filmmakers upsets the snowmobilers, while the filmmakers, having persuaded the manager of the factory to allow them to film, are discovering a long history of alienation and submission among the workers.

In the evening, as Gina gives her first performance, tension grows between her and the snowmobilers. That night Gina is alone in her room when one of the snowmobilers breaks in and rapes her. She decides to answer violence with violence and with the help of her manager and his friends she attacks the snowmobilers. After gaining violent retribution, she returns to Montreal, then flies to Mexico. Meanwhile, the filmmakers have been taken off the film by their producer following protests by the company and end up making a police thriller.

Denys Arcand’s extraordinary fatalistic dirge on life in Quebec might well have been subtitled “victimization as the inevitable condition of society.” Less overtly political than Réjeanne Padovani (1973), though equally about powerlessness, Gina draws ironic parallels between the documentary and fiction modes and between various kinds of alienation, defeat and submissiveness. An incisive indictment of class divisions in Quebec society, it speaks of humanity’s shared servitude, and offers no hope of a political solution. Gina has been aptly called “the most underrated of Arcand’s films” by NOW magazine film critic John Harkness, but also marked a turning point in Arcand’s career – he turned away from personal fiction films for the next ten years. The film’s spectacular violent denouement, which might seem reminiscent of the work of Sam Peckinpah, reflects Arcand’s view that violence is inevitable in a senselessly brutal society.

Quote:
One of the most controversial films in Canadian history, On est au coton is an examination of the exploitation and repression of textile workers in Quebec. This National Film Board production, more social inquiry than documentary, contrasts the lives of textile workers and their bosses and places their situation in an historical context by employing footage from old films about the industry. (The title is a pun which literally means “we are in cotton,” but it also connotes “we are fed up.”)

The left-leaning thesis of the film – that the workers are harshly exploited by their American bosses – made the NFB management nervous, which in turn made the film famous. It was shot in 1970, the year of the October Crisis, and the NFB felt that a film this provocative could only cause more trouble. Consequently, film commissioner Sydney Newman held back the release of On est au coton for six years, effectively banning it. Newman was quoted as saying, “Every possible legal means must be taken to prevent the release of the film.” The NFB claimed the film was inaccurate; the Canadian Textile Institute was more honest in objecting to the film on the grounds that it promoted class warfare and projected a bad image of the industry.

However, Denys Arcand’s gritty cinéma-vérité film was clandestinely transferred to video and widely distributed throughout Quebec, making Arcand’s name synonymous with radical politics. Though comparable in its socio-economic concerns to other Quebec films of the period, Arcand’s film also conveys his own pessimistic attitudes to the possibility of social change. The making of On est au coton forms one of the storylines in Arcand’s later dramatic feature Gina (1975), and in both films alienation is seen to create resignation and, inevitably, to suppress any possibility of revolt.

Quote:
Sexual revelations emerge when a group of academics and their partners spend a weekend at a country retreat.

Roger Ebert wrote:
Here is a movie where everybody talks about nothing but sex, and the real subject is wit. The movie takes place during a little more than 24 hours in the lives of some friends, who either work in the history department of a Canadian university, or sleep with people who do. They meet for dinner, and as they prepare and eat the food and drink the wine, they talk and talk about sex. But if you listen carefully, you will find that their real subject is not sex, but verbal cleverness, and that their real passion comes in the area of intellectual competition.

“The Decline of the American Empire” has been described, far and wide, as a French-Canadian version of “The Big Chill.” It reminded me more of “My Dinner With Andre.” It is about people whose private lives are mostly kept off-screen, so that we have to picture the adventures and exploits, the scandals and disappointments, as they describe them.

The movie is filled with words, lots of words, all of them in French with English subtitles. In a curious way, the subtitles are a bonus; they double the number of words contained in the movie, and underline the way that these intellectuals have been able to locate their sex lives mostly between their cerebral cortexes and their larynxes.

Sex itself is a very simple thing – so simple that it can be adequately discussed in such limited vocabularies and basic images as those used by Charles Bukowski or Henry Miller. But it is not the physical activity of sex that the characters in this movie are really talking about. They’re discussing the meaning of sex, the object of sex, the embarrassment and guilt, the ambition and silliness of sex. To them, as to so many civilized people, good sex boils down to winning the admiration of someone you admire. They’d rather have a mediocre time in bed with the right person than a great time with the wrong one.

Not all of the people in the movie are so distanced. The director and writer, Denys Arcand, first establishes all of the intellectuals and then introduces two characters who function as loose cannons below deck, so to speak. One is Mario, a rough, rude punk who turns up uninvited, looking for Diane, who is writing a book and does not seem at all the kind of woman to be attracted to such a clod. The other is Claude, a homosexual, who frankly confesses his hunger for dangerous sex with strangers. The appetites of Mario and Claude – and, by implication, Diane – are vaguely disturbing to the other characters, reminding them of a time long ago when their own sex drives were that urgent and compelling.

Meanwhile, however, they continue their verbal dance, trying to shock and surprise each other; top points go to the person who can put himself down while at the same time revealing what a fabulous person he really is. It turns out that not all of the people at the party have been faithful; some have cheated, and the revelations inspire the usual heartbreak and tears. Truth time is painful, but what’s fascinating is that the hurt comes from the words themselves: One character seems wounded not so much because her partner has been unfaithful as much as because he has chosen to tell her so.

The mistake, in viewing “The Decline of the American Empire,” is to think it’s about sex. It is really about what has replaced sex in our society – thinking and talking about sex. The movie is wise, deep, and painful, and it is filled with words. Used to be, a “sex film” contained lots of nudity and steamy scenes. That kind of stuff would just slow this one down.
