Based on the famed W.W.II cartoons: Lowbrow G.I.s Willie and Joe, on the Italian front, are good soldiers in combat, but meet the antics of gung-ho Captain Johnson and other military snafus with a barrage of wry comments. On a 3-day pass in Naples, Joe’s penchant for wine and women involves the pair with luscious Emi Rosso and her moonshiner father, whose tangled affairs land them in ever deeper trouble.

World War II is in full swing, and American soldiers Joe (David Wayne) and Willie (Tom Ewell) are fighting on the Italian front. Though they’re solid soldiers, their lighthearted demeanor and sarcastic disposition frequently get them in trouble with the stern Capt. Johnson (Jeffrey Lynn). In Naples, Joe becomes involved with Emi (Marina Berti), a beautiful Italian woman who helps the boys dodge the military police and eventually assists in recovering the soldiers’ failing supply lines.

From anttialanenfilmdiary.blogspot.com
Ben Halper sets up his barber’s shop at the turn of the century in Sevillinois and watches the town grow around him. Thinking it is for the best, he tries to shield his wife Nellie from the worries of the world. She finally rebels while he is away at war and takes a fateful trip to Chicago. This turns out to be the first of a number of critical family crises for Ben.

A “virtually unknown minor masterpiece of nostalgia in all its aspects”, according to Clive Denton, chronicling nearly 50 years of life in the small town of Sevillinois, narrated in flashback from the point of view of the town’s barber. One of the first instances in King’s cinema of a fully matured portrayal of a marital relationship, the barber and his beautiful and troubled wife are early character sketches for King’s late-period CinemaScope melodramas, especially Tender Is the Night. Based on a novel that was originally optioned by Edward G. Robinson’s company, with the plan being for him to star (which, considering Robinson’s age, could have led to something closer to film noir than melodrama), the film is a subtle take on King’s recurring motif of the fickleness of emotions. Here, King’s stoicism, his fascination with showing the process of building societies and his yearning look back at a lost America reach a climax that, in contrast with the alluring Technicolor cinematography, has a heavier heart and a darker mood than most of his other films.

Quote:
An alien virus’s brief pit stop in the new American West, starkly documented by Michael Crichton and Robert Wise. A satellite crashes in a New Mexico burg, soon the place is filled with bodies whose circulatory systems have turned to powder — these are the best sequences, full of hushed dread and unnerving use of widescreen dead spaces (the camera focuses on the placid, dusty face of a fallen villager, then tilts up to frame a couple of researchers approaching in hazmat suits and a helicopter whirring against a cobalt sky). The scientific team is rounded up: Exposition-dispenser Arthur Hill, surgeon James Olson (who gets a crush on the computer’s female voice), splenetic researcher Kate Reid, and veteran doctor David Wayne (“A hippie! He’s going to a love-in,” his suspicious wife cries as he packs for the secret mission). As befits a biological procedural, the already ponderous pace slows down to a crawl as the quartet makes its way through level after level of sterilization at an underground Nevada laboratory. (All the plodding repetition is worth it for Reid’s double-take as she learns that the coat of chalk covering her body is the charred remains of her outer skin layer.) The only contaminated survivors are a soused old man (George Mitchell) and a bawling baby, the interplanetary visitor is identified as an olive spatter which dilates into molecular origami patterns on an animated screen. All too clearly the bridge between The Day the Earth Stood Still and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the picture handles the material too literally: Covert germ warfare is dutifully alluded (“Establishment gonna go boom,” Reid snaps), yet Wise settles for Olson dodging laser beams instead of noticing, like Burroughs did, that “language is a virus from space.” Bringing Vietnam into the equation is a job for Romero (The Crazies), though the film nevertheless manages to close on a disquieting note, with Douglas Trumbull’s ominous solarized abstractions suggesting a sort of computer-age lettrism.

Based on a story by Paddy Chayefsky, this is the tale of a man, John Hodges, who is being forced to retire from his job, at the age of 65, and decides to fight back. His family can barely stand having him at home, and the traditional pursuits of the aged do not appeal. Impersonating the head of his former company, Hodges sets out to convince them to get rid of their outmoded retirement policy. He arrives at his old plant on an inspection tour where complications ensue. This movie features good performances, but it will probably be remembered more for the bit part played by a young Marilyn Monroe as the boss’ secretary
