Synopsis:
The eternal cop of Hong Kong cinema, Danny Lee teams up with genre master Kirk Wong for this blistering crime thriller. He’s Inspector Lee, derisively nicknamed “Crazy Dragon”, the obsessed, uncompromising head of the Royal Hong Kong Police’s Organized Crime & Triad Bureau. Surrounded on all sides by political scheming and bureaucratic red-tape, dogged by C.A.P.O. (Complaint Against Police Office, aka HK’s internal affairs) for perceived injustices, it is O.C.T.B. alone that stands the as last line of defense against the crime overruning the city. The target: Ho Kin-Tung (Anthony Wong), a violent and cunning thief who has amassed a criminal empire in the city. Having largely toppled his gang and sent him on the run, O.C.T.B. makes one last push to bring him to justice. However, his brothers-in-crime won’t let him go easy, chief of all his mistress, Cindy (Cecilia Yip), a beautiful and deadly woman who’ll go to any lengths for her devotion to Tung. As the battle escalates, with both sides taking increasingly dangerous and lawless means, blood will run through the streets of Hong Kong.

The middle entry of his “true crime” trilogy, after Crime Story and before Rock n’ Roll Cop, Kirk Wong takes the basic facts of a real-life case and embellishes it with a relentless energy, painting a furious picture of cops and criminals at war.

Ko Chow (Chow Yun-Fat) is an undercover cop who is under pressure from all sides. His boss, Inspector Lau (Yueh Sun), wants him to infiltrate a gang of ruthless jewel thieves; in order to do this he must obtain some handguns; his girlfriend (Carrie Ng) wants him to commit to marriage or she will leave Hong Kong with another lover; and he is being pursued by other cops who are unaware that he is a colleague.

What is more Chow would rather quit the force. He feels guilty about having to betray people who have become his friends, even if they do happen to be killers, drug dealers, loan sharks and protection racketeers: “I do my job, but I betray my friends.” To add to his problems, he begins to bond with Fu (Danny Lee), a member of the gang.

City on Fire is Ringo Lam’s most celebrated work. Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs borrows several key plot elements and scenes, most notably the famous Mexican standoff near the end of the film.
