During World War II a special fighting unit is formed combining a crack Canadian outfit and a conglomeration of US Army misfits previously serving time in military jails. After an initial period of conflict between the two groups, their enmity turns to respect and friendship and the unit is sent to Italy to attempt a dangerous mission which has heretofore been considered impossible to successfully complete.

Despite an ad campaign wherein RKO Radio congratulated itself for its “guts”, this long-delayed film version of Norman Mailer’s bestselling WW2 novel The Naked and the Dead still had to pull most of its punches (especially when it came to four-letter words). Aldo Ray heads the cast as sadistic sergeant Croft, who’d as soon kill one of his own men as he would the Japanese. Sensitive, moralistic Lieutenant Hearn (Cliff Robertson) tries to put a leash on Croft, but he’s ordered to keep out of the situation by psychotic General Cummings (Raymond Massey), who is convinced that soldiers will fight harder the more they hate their superiors. The film wavers uncomfortably between excessive violence and excessive moralizing, with time out for a few ill-conceived slapstick setpieces (including an outsized barroom brawl) and romantic interludes with such zaftig beauties as stripteaser Lili (Lili St. Cyr) and good-time girl Mildred (Barbara Nichols). In one of his first film appearances, comedian Joey Bishop plays Pvt. Roth, whose reaction to Sgt. Croft’s relentless anti-semitism culminates in a spectacular death scene. Distribution of The Naked and the Dead was taken over from the failing RKO Radio operation by Warner Bros., who also changed the name of the film’s widescreen process from SuperScope to WarnerScope.

The film has a impressive production aesthetic which is strengthened by the superb cinematography by Arthur J. Ornitz (Death Wish, Serpico). There are so many sequences in the film which feel enhanced from the scope of the visuals: from the experimental nature of the detailed study being conducted in the film to the outdoor landscapes of Charly swinging by on schoolyard swings. There is simply something compelling about this film’s visuals and its hypnotic style.

The music score is composed by the brilliant Ravi Shankar (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, The World of Apu) and is absolutely sublime. Having been a massive fan of his score collaborations with filmmaker Satyajit Ray and especially the work done on the brilliant Apu Trilogy, it was interesting to hear the Indian composer’s score style employed in a Hollywood production. While I wouldn’t say it reaches the same heights of some of his other work (from the Apu trilogy or the likes of tracks featured on the great Darjeeling Limited soundtrack)

The screenplay was written by Hollywood legend Stirling Stilliphant (In the Heat of the Night, The Towering Inferno). Though the storyline could have easily become overbearingly emotional or just downright offensive, the opposite is true. The film has the mark and craft of a genuine artist with a clear understanding of storytelling. Charly is a fully formed character and it’s fascinating to see the journey unfold for him as his life goes on such a peculiar swing-field of experiences while undergoing such a life-altering event as the brain-changing

Ralph Nelson (Lillies on the Field, Once a Thief) capably directs Charly with far more creativity than one would expect. Although the story feels like something which a Hollywood producer would want made into a typical drama, Nelson employ’s a much more arthouse style to the production with some interesting multi-panels in some scenes (bringing to mind De Palma’s Carrie and some of his other iconic works) as well as bringing a more artistic sensibility to the film’s conclusion. The creativity employed by Nelson can even be strongly felt through his choice of collaborators (especially in using Shankar for the score). Just like the character himself, Charly is a far better and more entertaining film than one expects.

Director Bob Fosse’s fact-based tale of Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratton’s short life and gruesome death focuses less on Stratton (Mariel Hemingway) than on her husband-manager, sleazoid pornographer and all-around failure Paul Snider (Eric Roberts, ideally cast). He sees the young beauty as his meal ticket and sets out to pimp her in the adult entertainment business. He marries her and appoints himself her career manager; soon after, she attracts the attention of Playboy executives and wins a spot in the magazine. As her success increases however, so does Snider’s alienation as he finds himself left out in the cold. His jealousy begins to consume him; she spurns him on the advice of her new friends; he goes berserk and confronts her. The same murder-suicide inspired the made-for-television Death of a Centerfold. This was choreographer/filmmaker Bob Fosse’s final film.

The plot rests on the premise that everyone with power is corrupt; Pollack and writers Lorenzo Semple Jr. and David Rayfiel keep the proceedings from devolving into the preposterous or unconvincing. True to form, Robert Redford represents the powerless, non-corrupt, masses as the film’s bookish CIA researcher Turner. Unlike some of the bleaker examples of the genre (1974’s The Parallax View), Redford’s character ultimately outwits the system and finds a way to fight the corruption, much as he would the following year in All the President’s Men. Redford’s charisma smoothes over some of Condor’s less-believable moments, and Sydney Pollack directs in the distinctively gloomy-but-lively style common to 1970s films.
