The making of Claude Lanzmann’s film “Shoah” was an adventure in itself. Twelve years of work, thousands of hours of preparation, travels to the four corners of the world, dozens of witnesses… and just as many doubts, setbacks, and dead ends, but also moments of painful grace when the truth emerged. Thanks to 220 hours of unused rushes and the memoirs of its director, Guillaume Ribot delves into the heart of the production of a major cinematic work, getting as close as possible to the obsessions of the man who undertook to bring truth out of oblivion…

Shoah (1985)

A 1985 French documentary film directed by Claude Lanzmann about the Holocaust (also known as the Shoah). The film primarily consists of his interviews with survivors and persons who had experience of the war, and visits to key Holocaust sites across Poland, including three extermination camps. He presents testimony from survivors, witnesses and bystanders, and perpetrators, including some rare interviews with German personnel.
As Claude Lanzmann does not speak Polish, Hebrew or Yiddish, he depended on translators to work with most of his interviewees. This process enlarged the scale of the documentary, which is nine hours and twenty-three minutes long. While winning notable awards, the film also aroused controversy and criticism, particularly in Poland. People criticized it for failing to show or discuss the many Poles who rescued Jews, or to recognize that millions of Poles were also killed by the Germans in an extermination campaign.

Using interviews and other footage shot especially for this documentary, French director Claude Lanzmann investigates the state of Israel in 1972. This movie concentrates on Israelis going about their business of everyday living. One interview shows the reactions of a concentration camp survivor, now a police chief, to being called a “Nazi” by demonstrators. Another segment follows the experiences of a Russian Jewish immigrant, beginning with his first visit to the Wailing Wall and continuing to his disturbing perception that he is welcomed more by virtue of his being Russian than for the fact that he is Jewish.

Quote:
Lanzmann’s 1973 film, Pourquoi Israel (Why Israel), linked Jewish identity in Israel to the recent history of the Holocaust. It premiered three days after the Yom Kippur War broke out in Israel. During the making of this film, Lanzmann met his wife, a German-Jewish writer to whom the film is dedicated.

Quote:
1975. In Rome, Claude Lanzmann filmed Benjamin Murmelstein, the last President of the Jewish Council in the Theresienstadt ghetto, the only “Elder of the Jews” not to have been killed during the war. A rabbi in Vienna, following the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, Murmelstein fought bitterly with Adolf Eichmann, week after week for seven years, managing to help around 121,000 Jews leave the country, and preventing the liquidation of the ghetto.
2012. Claude Lanzmann, at 87 – without masking anything of the passage of time on men, but showing the incredible permanence of the locations – exhumes these interviews shot in Rome, returning to Theresienstadt, the town “given to the Jews by Hitler”, a so-called “model ghetto”, but a ghetto of deceit chosen by Adolf Eichmann to dupe the world. We discover the extraordinary personality of Benjamin Murmelstein: a man blessed with a dazzling intelligence and a true courage, which, along with an unrivaled memory, makes him a wonderfully wry, sardonic and authentic storyteller.
Through these three periods, from Nisko in Poland to Theresienstadt, and from Vienna to Rome the film provides an unprecedented insight into the genesis of the Final Solution. It reveals the true face of Eichmann, and exposes without artifice the savage contradictions of the Jewish Councils.

Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian wrote:
Claude Lanzmann’s fascinating interview with the only Jewish ‘elder’ who negotiated with Adolf Eichmann is a subtle study in survivor non-guilt

At 87, Claude Lanzmann is still capable of enforcing his film-making personality on European cinema: he is a landmark in the shadow of his great subject, the Holocaust. His film, Shoah, is now best seen not merely as an incomparable record, but as an intervention in history, an insistence on eyewitness testimony and compelling truth. This new film is a remarkable companion to his masterpiece Shoah: a fascinating encounter, recorded in Rome in the 1970s, while working on his great film but not used at the time, for reasons that Lanzmann leaves us to ponder.
It is an interview with Benjamin Murmelstein, an Austrian Jew and last surviving “chairman” of the Theresienstadt ghetto, near Prague, a supposedly comfortable Potemkin-style arrangement that was part of a sickening pantomime of ostensible good faith after the Anschluss. Murmelstein explains that their inhabitants, and the world, were distracted with the fatuous fantasy of being shipped over to Madagascar: a cynical euphemism for the death marches and extermination, in which Murmelstein was held to be complicit. The Nazis coerced leading Jews to be their administrative “elders” there, a queasy use of Judeophobe-propagandist terminology, and Murmelstein was the last surviving example (his predecessors were murdered by the Nazis).
He was a man hated after the war for being a collaborator. But he was someone who perhaps saved lives due to his endless and often terrifying negotiations with Adolf Eichmann on the subject of emigration, when the Nazi authorities still believed that allowing Jews to depart without their money might be practicable and profitable.
Lanzmann treats Murmelstein with generosity, emphasising the cruelty and sadism with which these elders were treated. Murmelstein is a riveting subtle study in survivor non-guilt – voluble, eloquent and shrewd. But as the story progresses towards 1945, and the fact that Thereisenstadt’s inhabitants perished and he did not, Murmelstein becomes increasingly vehement and even slightly hysterical.
Lanzmann sombrely introduces his film at the railway station. These stations – modern places with their tracks receding endlessly over the horizon – look like anti-memorials. As for Murmelstein, he is almost, like Eichmann, a refugee, in exile or hiding. Lanzmann himself is perhaps part interlocutor and part confessor, like Gitta Sereny with Albert Speer. The film itself is haunted and haunting.

The Sobibor uprising in 1943 in Poland was investigated by Mr. Lanzmann many years ago when he was filming “Shoah” and his interviews with a participant named Lerner date from then. The director felt that the Sobibor uprising, which led to the closure of the extermination camp by the Nazis after many escaped, was too important to be a small part of his epic documentary. Now he has returned to this little known story.

Although Mr. Lerner is alive and well in Israel, Mr. Lanzmann felt that the much earlier footage of his extensive interview with the heroic survivor was all he needed and, in fact, the film is the interview itself. It follows Mr Lerner’s displacements from Warsaw ghetto to Sobibor, through Minsk ghetto and many other camps.

At Sobibor, where Jews were usually gassed almost immediately upon arrival, a small number were selected for slave labor. Knowing that they were doomed and led by an experienced soldier, a Jewish captain of the Red Army, a handful of inmates resolved to kill the few Germans in command of the large and brutal Ukrainian contingent that actually did most of the dirty work.

Despite the horror of the situation and Mr. Lerner’s subdued but dramatic recitation of his many escapes from German hands before landing in Sobibor, both he and the audience can not resist a smile when he repeatedly emphasizes that the escape plot could never have succeeded but for the Germans’ compulsive, indeed fanatical, penchant for punctuality. That was the key to quickly killing them before any discovered what was coming down. Each was lured to a different camp shop with their “appointments” spaced only a few minutes apart.

The film ends with a long recitation by the director of the dates, places of origin and numbers of each of the transports to Sobibor. Chilling – and this infamous monument to madness was only one extermination camp.”
