Anita is a girl of only teenage years, and while she has developed early physically, to a mature woman, she is emotionally struggling. Her relationship with her parents and her friends is very poor and she is regarded with contempt by the people around her, even by the men who so ruthlessly use her. During her troubles she meets Erik, a young psychology student. Gently and carefully he begins to dispel her psychological blocks. In the course of this treatment she reveals to him some of the shocking episodes of her previous experiences. Erik believes he has the solution to Anita’s problems: to let her move into an artist’s communal experiment, of which he is already a member. The common interest of this collective is largely the performing of classical music. Anita’s presence in the collective, however, is regarded by some of the other girls as highly provocative. Anita’s nymphomania is her means of protest against her parents, school, society and her own environment (her whole life situation). He therefore tries to get her to see clearly, and with some insight, the breadth of her psychological situation. Against the background of the intensive battle that Anita carries on with the self-destructive drives within her, grows the depth of feeling that bind her and Erik together. She is no longer simply a “case” for him. Anita discovers that Erik is the one man whom she both wants to, and can, remain with.

Filmmaker Adrian Garcia Bogliano taps into many sub genres: Cronenbergian body horror; Lynch doubles; Craven dreamscapes; ‘RING’ like overtones (audio instead of video), ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ viscera and even echoes of giallo. It plays like a greatest hits of modern-day terror.

Lee Hazelwood plays Smoke. An American in Sweden, who works at a local factory and lives in a collective with other hippies and factory workers (among them Christina Lindberg). Together these youngsters go on strike. The owner’s daughter, who Smokes dates, gets murdered (‘smoked’) by one of the factory worker whom later blames Smoke. Smoke gets shot and wounded, and everything is down from there.

She then finds her way to a nightclub and to cut a long story short is ganged-banged by some odd-looking characters. Christina is not having a lot of luck is she, poor girl! The Japanese man (who seems to have fallen in love with her), finds her walking the streets barefooted and in a terrible state… Listen, who cares about the ridiculous plot as most will only be watching this film to see Christina in action. Now on to the important stuff. There is some soft-core sex on show and a couple of rape scenes which are not particularly explicit. We get plenty of fantastic close-ups of Christina’s adorable face. I don’t think she has ever looked more enchanting as she does in this film — amazing! ‘Journey to Japan’ its English title is also quite artistically shot which is a plus point.

With periodic flashbacks and fantasy sequences, Exposed, in terms of its narrative structure at least, is a bit more complicated than your average sexploitation picture. While on the surface Lena is a typical, if flawed, central character the film lets us get into her head enough that even if we don’t completely see her as an innocent, we can at least feel for her. Her plight with Helge and his blackmailing ways is a sticky situation to be sure and while his coercion into the world of kinky sex allows for many titillating sequences, you can’t help but feel sorry for Lena. That said, she uses her sexuality to put herself in rather precarious situations and at times you almost wonder if she subconsciously wants the dysfunction that seems to follow her around. Consider this alongside the way that she’s treated by most of the men in the film, whose eyes linger on her quite voraciously, and you’re left trying to figure out how much of her dire situation she’s put herself in, rather than found herself in.

In terms of the acting, Lindberg is really quite good here. Her natural doe-eyed innocent looks really lends itself perfectly to the role and she mixes this with her smoldering sexuality to make for a memorable performance, one in which she often looks comfortably numb. While she’s naked as often as she’s clothed (and that is something that can easily distract fans of the female form from her acting ability) she really is unnervingly effective in the role. Equally impressive, at least in terms of acting ability if not on a physical level, if Heinz Hopf’s deliciously sleazy turn at Helge. Bjorn Adelly is perfectly fine as Jan, but it’s Hopf as Helge who really stands out in the male cast, as he really epitomizes the typical sleazy male predator.

Teetering on the edge of ‘art film’ territory at times, the picture does a good job of making us think, particularly in terms of what’s happened in the real world versus what’s happened in Lena’s fantasy world. The set design sometimes reflects these differences and possibly offers some clues in that regard – you’ll notice that the picture varies between nice, out door shots and barely decorated and often bleak interiors. The cinematography and score accentuate these differences at times, making Exposed a film of legitimate artistic merit. As trashy and sordid as it at times can be, it’s quite a well made picture and one that proves Lindberg really was much more than just another pretty face.
