With the same visual flair used in his distinctive yakuza films, director Kinji Fukasaku (The Yakuza Papers) tells the riveting story of five kids who come to Tokyo for work in If You Were Young: Rage.

In the 1960s, Japanese teens were often sent from rural areas to Tokyo and other major cities, helping to fuel Japanâ€s rapid economic development. Fukasaku shows the shocking consequences for idealistic youths whose dreams are soon torn apart in a chaos of class turmoil and youthful indiscretion.

It´s very difficult to describe “If You Were Young: Rage” because its novelty doesn´t, as I said previously, lie in the story. If taken chronologically, the film is a simple tale; Group of friends have no purpose. Group of friends finds purpose. Group of friends slowly splinters. Few remnants fulfill purpose. Group of friends comes back together, but not all ends happily. The wonder of the story comes in the telling, in the monochromatic flashbacks that are stuttered and jumpy, showing barely enough information to reveal its purpose before it returns to the present. Instead of laying out the story in a syllogistic fashion, Fukasaku built a complete film that draws you into the character relationships by slowly tipping his hand, one card at a time. What looks at first like a simple story of two friends becomes a complex interrelationship of late ´60s youth in Japan. Some of the most interesting characters and traits of the early characters aren´t even unveiled until the final third of the film. And instead of being disjointed and forced, the character development feels very natural. Fukasaku shows the audience the character´s flaws at the same time the characters themselves come to understand their emotions.

Yoshida returned to feature filmmaking after a hiatus of thirteen years with this brave and moving film about the struggle to maintain dignity in the face of old age and approaching death. The Human Promise reaffirms Yoshida’s ability to deal with difficult and even taboo topics by exploring the question of euthanasia with a profound sensitivity and subtlety. The film’s unusually frank meditation on death is anchored by the restrained performances by its veteran actors, including Rentaro Mikni, who starred in several of Yoshida’s earlier works, including A Story Written on Water. The Human Promise’s use of water imagery enriches a motif central to the rich ambiguity at the heart of Yoshida’s cinema.

The Tokyo engineer Kariya arrives on a primitive tropical island to drill a well to provide water for the sugar mill. He is assisted on the island by Kametaro, from the inbred Futori family. Nekichi is in love with his sister Uma, who is a shaman priestess at the sacred shrine, that contains the only good water close to the mill. She is also the mistress of Ryu, the manager of the mill.
