Par une chaude journée d’été, une bande de garçons de la banlieue de Rome jouent et rient dans une des nombreuses rivières qui entourent la ville. La caméra les scrute, les approche, révèle les gestes et les regards, et les enveloppe d’une sorte de danse visuelle, tandis que les mots du commentaire – confié à la sensibilité poétique de Pier Paolo Pasolini – racontent les histoires, les désirs, les rêves, l’avenir

« Quatre ans après “Ignoti alla città”, Cecilia Mangini pénètre à nouveau le territoire des “ragazzi”, celui du terrain de jeu aux portes de la ville de ces jeunes enfants laissés-pour-compte. Sur les berges de l’étang marécageux des Borgate, la caméra épouse leurs jeux au plus près des corps, sublimés par des cadrages serrés, un montage alerte et une musique composée par le fidèle Egisto Macchi. Le texte est écrit à la première personne : un “je” qui s’approprie l’histoire et le dialecte de ces jeunes et pose un regard d’adulte sur ce temps de l’enfance où l’on brave tous les interdits. Cette composition poétique déborde de la joyeuse vitalité propre à ce temps de l’insouciance et de la provocation. Le temps de la révolte que l’on pressent dans “Ignoti alla città”, n’est peut-être pas très loin. »

On a hot summer day, a gang of boys from the Roman suburbs play and laugh in one of the many streams that surround the city. The camera scrutinizes them, approaches them, reveals gestures and looks, and wraps them in a kind of visual dance, while the words of the commentary – entrusted to the poetic sensibility of Pier Paolo Pasolini – tell their stories, desires, dreams, their future.

“Four years after “Ignoti alla città”, Cecilia Mangini again enters the territory of the “ragazzi”, the playground at the gates of the city of these young children left behind. On the banks of the marshy pond by the Roman slums, the camera marries their games as closely as possible to their bodies, sublimated by tight framing, an alert montage and music composed by the faithful Egisto Macchi. The text is written in the first person: an “I” who appropriates the history and the dialect of these young people and puts an adult’s eye on this childhood time where one braves all the interdicts. This poetic composition overflows with the joyful vitality of this time of carelessness and provocation. The time of the revolt that hurries upon them in “Ignoti alla città” may not be too far away.”
