Martin (played by José Luis López Vázquez, a legend of Spanish film and theatre) is a middle-aged engineer employed by a big shipbuilding firm in the northern city of Bilbao. Quiet, diligent in his work and reserved, Martin is a model of respectability. His secretary, Monica (played by Helga Line) often asks about his wife, whom no-one has ever met and who seems to be an invalid.

Every evening after work, Martin returns to his big, gloomy house that looks out over the bay and towards the north Atlantic Ocean.

What his colleagues, and the world, do not know is what happens then, behind the closed doors of his dark villa. For Martin’s “wife” is certainly not dead. In fact, he has a very unusual relationship with her, one that he is very concerned to keep a secret.
One day a woman in her late 30s, Lina, moves into a rented apartment near to Martin’s house. She has an eight-year-old daughter, Cati, who is allowed to roam free during the day, as her mother works late in a nightclub in town and often has “gentleman callers” who tumble noisily out of cars in the middle of the night, much to Martin’s displeasure.

Cati is a curious child, with no friends and too much time on her hands. Very quickly she discovers Martin’s secret. And equally quickly she discloses it to her mother who decides to use it to her advantage. They move into Martin’s house, soon followed by Lina’s pimp, Mauro. Martin will be forced to take desperate measures to protect his quiet life and his “wife”.

A dark and moody psycho-thriller, drenched in the mysterious, mist-soaked atmosphere of the old city of Bilbao, the film was a huge hit on initial, release and is now ripe for rediscovery as a lost gem of Spanish cinema.

No One Heard the Scream is an apt title as it’s unlikely any audience members will be screaming. That’s not a knock against it at all. I was pleasantly surprised that this subverted my expectations. This being an Eloy De La Iglesia film I should’ve known better. Every film I’ve seen from him has had a distinction of a signature director aka an auteur. Two neighbors in a practically abandoned apartment complex meet cute, actually NO, more like meet MURDER. They end up on a road trip to dispose of a body. There are some excellent Hitchockian elements involving the trunk of a car and the police. About an hour in I started to get a little frustrated because it wasn’t giving me any horror. Once I adjusted my expectations I was able to enjoy the ride. It’s beautifully filmed and the leads are charming and cute (in a twisted way) together as they play a game of cat and mouse while also flirting. De La Iglesia was gay and he makes sure to give us some homoerotic gaze in the form of a shirtless guy with a washboard stomach. How fun! As we come to the end of our story it seems we might have a happily ever after finale. Not quite. To my surprise in the end I didn’t SCREAM but I did GASP.

“No One Heard the Scream” is another terrific Spanish horror film from the troubled director Eloy de la Iglesia. The film stars two of his strongest performers, Carmen Sevilla (from de la Iglesia’s “The Glass Ceiling”) and Vincente Parra (from de la Iglesia’s “Cannibal Man”), and so with these two tried-and-true leads it is hard for this film to fail. While it is not as overtly frightening as the other two aforementioned films, “No One Heard the Scream” definitely has its moments. Sevilla plays a professional mistress who bids farewell to her older lover when she meets the handsome man next door (Parra); unfortunately for Sevilla, Parra has just murdered his wife.

This film explores the same themes as the director’s other films, such as voyeurism, socialism, society’s class system, and of course the director’s obvious liking of homoerotic imagery is here in abundance when Parra and another male cast member frequently go shirtless. The leads are strong, the plot is tight and coherent, and the climactic scene is truly jolting and shocking. Therefore, if you have enjoyed the director’s other films, this one is a must-see. de la Iglesia’s approach to violence is probably seen as more tame today than it did in the early 1970’s, but is still more horrifying with its minimal special effects than today’s big budgeted gross-out films.

To conclude, this is a horror film for the thinking person. And the moral of the story, as was the case in “The Glass Ceiling”, appears to be simple: “Mind Your Own Business!”
