An itinerant preacher and his wife and daughter rescue a Mexican boy who is the sole survivor of a massacre perpetrated by southern slaveowner. The boy grows up into Lou Castel as the daughter who becomes Barbara Frey, who’s like a sister to him now, wanders off into the moral morass of this film’s depiction of the west to become somewhat like a sex slave in one of the tawdriest saloons ever put on screen. Into this depravity wanders Castel in search of the daughter, his sister, and which leads him to Mark Damon, the evil southerner, who basically owns a town and employs a small army of enforcers, one of whom is a blond Franco Citti who kind of resembles Klaus Kinski. It just gets more twisted as it progresses, with a mesmerizing “drink and shoot” contest between Castel and Damon. It’s the twisted Damon’s idea. This guy has to be seen. He looks like Deracula himself. Riz Ortolani provided a minimal score, a lot of which is single notes on an acoustic guitar with some rhythmic accompaniment, that goes well with everything, especially the bleak desert-like physical environmnet. It’s got everything, racism, sexism, spirituality, some truly imaginative use of guns, and a thread that holds it together.

Alvaro Cosenza, also known as the Hunchback from Quarticciolo (Il Gobbo del Quarticciolo), during Rome’s occupation by Nazis in 1943, decides to revolt. He starts his career of rebel like a partisan against the German occupants, fighting for freedom. The war goes on, and after the Nazis the Allied enter Roma as liberators. Now the Hunchback, like all the Rome’s inhabitants, is finally a free man. But he doesn’t leave the renegade life style as expected. In 1945, Benito Mussolini goes to Milan to talk with Archbishop Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster to request his help in escaping from Italy. The Republic of Salò, the last bastion of fascism, is decaying, and the Americans, along with the partisans are about to win control of Milan. Mussolini flees, pursued by his lover Claretta Petacci, and manages to get to the northern village of Dongo. There he clashes with the Germans, who order him to disguise himself as an officer of Germany rather than be captured by the partisans. Mussolini accepts without objection, always hoping for a revolt of his loyal fascists, but they are in jeopardy. When Mussolini is recognised, Walter Audisio, the leader of the partisans, initially wants to hand him over to the Americans, so that Mussolini undergoes due process. But the war crimes of the Duce are too great, so Audisio makes the decision to shoot him in front of the Villa Belmonte in the village of Giulino, along with his female companion.
