“Then I won’t be a girl. And I won’t be weak and I won’t be silly. I’ll be a boy and rough and hard. I won’t care what I do. Don’t worry! I’m ready for anything.”
– Sylvia (Katharine Hepburn)

Sylvia Scarlett is a 1935 romantic comedy film starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, based on The Early Life and Adventures of Sylvia Scarlett, a novel by Compton MacKenzie. Directed by George Cukor, it was notorious as one of the most famous unsuccessful movies of the 1930s. Hepburn plays the title role of Sylvia Scarlett, a female con artist masquerading as a boy to escape the police. The success of the subterfuge is in large part due to the transformation of Hepburn by RKO make-up artist Mel Berns.

This film was the first pairing of Grant and Hepburn, who later starred together in Bringing Up Baby (1938), Holiday (1938), and The Philadelphia Story (1940). Cary Grant’s performance as a dashing rogue sees him incorporate a (rather unconvincing) Cockney accent and remains widely considered the first time Grant’s famous personality began to register on film. (Grant only used the Cockney accent in a few other films, notably 1939’s Gunga Din and Clifford Odets’ None but the Lonely Heart in 1944.) Cockney was not, however, Cary Grant’s original accent. He was born and grew up in Bristol, which has a very different accent from that of London, although it was much closer to Grant’s pre-Hollywood accent than the voice he used in most films, an essentially successful product of his attempting to sound more American in order to broaden the range of roles for which he could be cast.

Rosalind Russell plays aspiring Ohio journalist Ruth Sherwood, who heads for New York to seek her fortune, accompanied by her sister, Eileen (Janet Blair), an aspiring actress. The girls take a basement apartment in Greenwich Village, which becomes a gathering place for several oddball characters, including a football jock (Gordon Jones), his silly wife (Miss Jeff Donnell) and an eternally drunken fortuneteller (June Havoc). Ruth tries to sell her writing, but is advised by a friendly magazine editor (Brian Aherne) that she’ll never succeed unless she writes from her own experiences. Meanwhile, Eileen is continually getting in trouble due to her ingenuous attractiveness.

“Lancelot and Guinevere” (known as “Sword of Lancelot” in the U.S.) is a British 1963 film starring Cornel Wilde and his real-life wife at the time, Jean Wallace. This lesser-known version of the Camelot legend, is a work almost solely made by Cornel Wilde, who co-produced, directed, co-wrote, and played Lancelot.

Lancelot is King Arthur’s most valued Knight of the Round Table and a paragon of courage and virtue. Things change, however, when he falls for Guinevere (Wallace), bride of Arthur (Brian Aherne, who had essayed this character more than once, e.g. in 1954’s “Prince Valiant”), and she for him.

Made ten years after Richard Thorpe’s film “Knights of the Round Table”, the illicit romance this time is portrayed as a more intimate affair, and the sword fights have a more menacing reality (Wilde was an excellent fencer). A sub-plot concerns Arthur’s effort to forestall a challenge from a rival king, a problem that will inevitably catch Lancelot up in a personal conflict.
