Synopsis
When the proprietor of the inn “Le Trou normand” dies, everyone in the small town of Courteville is curious to know who will inherit his estate. To the chagrin of the dead man’s sister-in-law, the sole beneficiary is his nephew, the hapless Hyppolite Lemoine. However, Hyppolite will inherit only if he can obtain a school certificate. Reluctantly, the gawky middle-aged man agrees to go back to school. His scheming aunt isn’t ready to admit defeat so easily, and intends to use her beautiful daughter to thwart Hyppolite’s chances in the end-of-year exam…

A feud between families in 1870’s rural France.

A few years after their successful collaboration on La Traversée de Paris (1956), director Claude Autant-Lara and the popular comic actor Bourvil worked together on this light-hearted farce, based on a best-selling novel by Marcel Aymé. One of Autant-Lara’s more cheerful films, La Jument verte benefits from an exceptionally talented cast, which includes such big names as Francis Blanche, Yves Robert, Georges Wilson and Marie Déa, as well as the great Bourvil (who, needless to say, gives great value). In contrast to many popular French comedies of this period, the film had a substantial budget and consequentially exceptional production values, not least of which is the sumptuous colour photography. Although not quite as controversial as some of Autant-Lara’s earlier films, some of the jokes do come close to the limit of what was acceptable at the time, and the film’s risqué trailer was banned for an under-eighteen audience.

Synopsis
Un Drole de Dimanche (What a Sunday) stars Danielle Darrieux as Catherine and Bourvil as her ex-husband Jean. By chance, Catherine and Jean are reunited five years after she walked out of his life. Synopsis:
Paris, 1943. With the country still under Nazi occupation and commodities severely rationed, ordinary French people muddle through as best they can. Charles Michaud is a law-abiding man of impeccable morals who becomes duly anxious when he finds that his 17-year-old son Antoine has been regularly absconding from school. Little does he know that his wayward offspring has been busy engaging in black market activities with his friend Paul Tiercelin, so that he can earn enough money to keep his mistress Yvette in the manner to which she has grown accustomed.

To uncover what his son is up to, Charles confides his concerns in Paul’s father, the owner of a restaurant frequented by German officers that is supplied by black market produce. To deflect Charles’s attention from his son’s dubious exploits, Monsieur Tiercelin brings him into contact with Olga, a young woman of very easy virtue. Meanwhile, Antoine’s career as a black marketeer proves increasingly lucrative and the young man is soon taking delivery of a large consignment of champagne. Despite various attempts to distract him, it is not long before Monsieur Michaud discovers the truth about his son…
