Sarajevo‘s Hotel Europe is bustling in preparation for tonight‘s European Union gala for the centennial of Archduke Franz Ferdinand‘s assassination. But the disgruntled staff plans to strike because they haven‘t been paid for two months.

If this prestigious political dinner fails, the already mortgaged hotel will be shut down by the bank. With no time to lose to stop the strike, hotel manager Omer must turn to tough guy Enzo, who runs the cellar strip club. The staff union rep soon goes missing.

Dedicated and pretty chief receptionist Lamija does her absolute best to keep everything running smoothly toward the big event. But things get tricky when her mother Hatidza, of the laundry room, is elected strike leader. The VIP keynote speaker doesn‘t have much time to prepare, and he stumbles through complex details and names. The French guest‘s rehearsals in his room are secretly recorded in B&W. Surveillance is high (literally) due to a nose-happy video security guy.

On the hotel roof, TV journalist Vedrana conducts interviews for a centennial special. Among her guests is Gavrilo Princip, the namesake descendant of the Archduke‘s assassin. Firm political stances quickly lead to age-old arguments. From the hotel roof to the cellar club, via the reception, laundry room and kitchen, increasing tensions turn the Hotel Europe into an ideological pressure cooker.

Lost and Found is a film project for which six young filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe have each developed a short film on the theme of generation. Together, these six short films make a whole cinema evening. Unique thereby is the selection of young directors, who are currently among the most talented in the Central and Eastern European region. Also special is that five of the short films (four short narrative films and one short documentary) are visually framed by an independent animation story. The filmmakers made their films with local producers in their home countries; postproduction was carried out in Germany. The theme generation is the thread running through the whole film. It mirrors a new selfunderstanding of young filmmakers in Central and Eastern Europe. Traditions and national history are viewed in a new way and cinematically narrated. The concept of generation was not intended to neutralize the differences between the countries, but to create a fascinating frame for comparison. The stories were written in accordance with this thematic guideline especially for this project. Partner countries in Central and Eastern Europe were selected that have their own film culture, but in which available production structures are meager, due to economic and/or political developments.
“Lost and Found” was initiated by relations, an initiative project of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), which develops and fosters art and culture projects in various countries in Eastern Europe and Germany.

Made while director Kaori Oda was studying at Béla Tarr’s Film.Factory in Sarajevo, Aragane is, on the surface, a documentary about a Bosnian coalmine. As Oda takes us underground, the surroundings are illuminated solely by the available light of the miners’ headlamps, creating a state of sensual semi-blindness that both attunes us to the dangers of the mine and — with the beams cutting arcs of light through the blackness and casting shadows on the cavern walls — becomes an organic metaphor for the roots of cinema itself. It is not surprising that commentators have drawn similarities between Oda’s work and that of Harvard’s renowned Sensory Ethnography Lab: as in such films as Leviathan and Manakamana, in Aragane Oda attempts to understand her subjects through an embodied presence that moves beyond distanced knowledge and towards intimate entanglement.

“[Aragane] literally reinvents my idea of what cinema is and can be — and not only because it unfolds mostly in darkness … it has an exquisite formal and even abstract beauty that is complemented, complicated, and sometimes even contradicted throughout by a continuous human presence” (Jonathan Rosenbaum).
