From the collapse of the Soviet Union to Putin’s rule: how Russia became free and what it did with this freedom. The story of Boris Yeltsin and his times, told by his comrades, family, friends, and foes.

S1.E1 ∙ The Awakening

The young General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev is trying to reform the decrepit regime, inadvertently launching a chain reaction of events that the Soviet government quickly becomes unable to control. A new leader is born from the turmoil of perestroika: Boris Yeltsin becomes the spearhead of democratic forces, and Gorbachev soon begins perceiving him as a threat.

S1.E2 ∙ Coup D’état

Determined to quell the democratic reforms, Soviet hardliners, led by the director of the KGB, place Mikhail Gorbachev under house arrest and orchestrate a coup d’état. However, citizens of the emerging new Russia, spearheaded by Boris Yeltsin, stop the plotters from seizing power. The Soviet regime is now doomed.

S1.E3 ∙ Belovezhskaya Pushcha

The defeat of the coup launches a chain reaction: republics leave the USSR one after another, and soon the Soviet Union, which seemed unbreakable just a year ago, officially ceases to exist. Boris Yeltsin and his comrades have only a few months to decide which way path the new Russia will take.

S1.E4 ∙ Shock Therapy

To avoid the looming economic disaster in Russia, President Boris Yeltsin appoints a cabinet of “Young Reformers” and launches radical reforms, which face significant public opposition. The President implements necessary but painful measures, sacrificing his popularity for the sake of the country’s economic stability.

S1.E5 ∙ The Stand-off

Boris Yeltsin faces an unexpected opponent: the Russian parliament, which hinders his reforms and attempts to seize power. In the autumn of 1993, the political crisis escalates into a civil war on the streets of Moscow, as the president and parliament clash violently for control of the country’s future.

S1.E6 ∙ The First Chechen War

At the end of 1994, a war begins in Russia: Moscow sends federal troops into Chechnya, which had declared independence. The authorities expect a quick victory but instead find themselves in a prolonged, bloody conflict. Even those who had supported Yeltsin since the beginning of the perestroika turn away from him.

S1.E7 ∙ Vote or Lose

Tired of politics, ill, and having lost much of his popularity, Boris Yeltsin makes the decision to run for a second term as President of Russia. Nearly everyone around him believes that he will inevitably lose to the Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov. However, against all odds, Yeltsin manages to unite the elites and the general public behind his candidacy, ultimately securing a victory in the election.

S1.E8 ∙ Young Reformers

After recovering from heart surgery, Boris Yeltsin initiates a new wave of economic reforms. However, the reformist government soon clashes with powerful oligarchs, leading to a severe economic crisis that engulfs the country. Faced with mounting challenges, Yeltsin is forced to make concessions and reach a compromise with the communist opposition to navigate the turbulent political and economic landscape of Russia.

S1.E9 ∙ In Search of a Successor

Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov’s popularity surges as he successfully navigates the aftermath of the crisis and takes a firm stance against NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia. However, amid an unfolding corruption scandal allegedly involving President Yeltsin’s inner circle, known as the “family,” Yeltsin grows wary of Primakov’s increasing ambition. Just months later, the president dismisses the prime minister, perceiving him as a potential threat to his power.

S1.E10 ∙ Take Care of Russia!

After an extensive search, Yeltsin chooses Vladimir Putin, the former director of the FSB, as his successor. Initially, this decision raises eyebrows and appears to be an odd choice to many. However, within a matter of months, Putin’s popularity skyrockets, making him the most well-liked politician in the country. Convinced that his gamble has paid off, Yeltsin, assured of his strategic move’s success, proceeds to make the most fateful and consequential political decision of his entire career.

RBG is a 2018 American documentary film directed and produced by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, focusing on the life and career of United States Supreme Court of the United States Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, the film was released in the United States on May 4, 2018.

SYNOPISIS:
A look at the career of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which has spanned many decades, and how she developed a legal legacy while becoming prominent within pop culture. The film is a biographical depiction of the Supreme Court Justice from her birth in Brooklyn, New York through her rise to the Supreme Court, up to the year of the film’s distribution in 2018.

Ruth Bader was born in Brooklyn into a first generation American Jewish family. As a student she excelled in school and went to Cornell University where she met her future life-long husband. Both would go on to become attorneys with her specializing in the representation of sexual equality cases, while he went on to become a leading tax attorney working in New York. Ruth Bader represented cases for both sexes experiencing inequality within culture and society regarding issues of sexual equality. She represented cases involving discrimination against women in the armed services who were denied equal treatment in the armed forces, and she successfully defended single parent male clients who were denied access to social security benefits normally allowed to single mothers (gender preference) but denied to male applicants. She represented several cases at the Supreme Court as an attorney representing clients well before she herself became a member of the Supreme Court.

Her ascent within the field of becoming a judge in American jurisprudence began with the Carter administration, and Jimmy Carter successfully nominated her for the appellate court. Next, Bill Clinton successfully nominated her to the Supreme Court when Mario Cuomo indicated he had no interest in accepting such a nomination. Ruth Bader Ginsburg (taking her husband’s family name) was appointed with nearly the full affirmation of the Senate. The film makes much of her ascendant prominence in popular culture by repeatedly referring to her nickname in the popular press calling her ‘Notorious RBG’, as a playful pun on the name of pop rapper known as The Notorious B.I.G. Her own response to this nickname is usually with humour citing that the two of them have much in common since they were both born in Brooklyn.

In 2010 her husband died from prostate cancer after years of suffering. Her granddaughter, who appears in interviews throughout the film, is now a graduate of Harvard Law School, and refers to her grandmother, RBG, as ‘bubbeh’, the familiar Jewish appellation for a loved grandmother. Her granddaughter recollects the very different humour which she saw in her two grandparents when they were together, with ‘bubbeh’ being stoical in her sense of humour, while her grandfather was more overt in using humour to dispel tension and increase positive feeling within the family. In a rare interview that is shown in this documentary, a reporter asked Ruth Bader’s husband what it was like to be the husband of such a prominent Justice of the Supreme Court, whereupon he answered, commenting on his wife as not being the best of cooks, that she has learned over the years not to give him advice on cooking when he is preparing food in the kitchen and that he has learned not to give her advice on matters of the interpretation of the law.

When asked how long she plans to stay on the Supreme Court, RBG responded that she would only stay on the Supreme Court so long as she was able to address the cases placed before her with the full ability and full integrity of her lifetime of experience in practicing the law, and that she would not continue if that was no longer in her ability to accomplish.
