As passions rise over Brexit many of the UK’s female MPs have received death threats and rape threats online. I struggled to comprehend the source of this tide of rage which seemed out of all proportion to a mere difference of political opinion. Then I watched this documentary about the online “incel” community and it all started to make a little more sense. “Incel” is short for, “involuntary celibate”, in other words, a guy who isn’t getting any sex.

Of course, there’s never been any shortage of sexually frustrated males, as the recent rise of the online “seduction community” of pickup artists and peddlers of “NLP hypnotic seduction secrets” demonstrates all too clearly. But however sinister and manipulative those communities might be, at least their members have enough hope to believe that they’re still in with a chance. The incels have just stopped trying. They’ve given up on women and channeled their dammed-up sexual energy into a seething hatred and resentment of all things feminine.

The incel poster-boy is Elliot Rodger, who killed six people and injured fourteen others near the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara, before killing himself inside his vehicle. Before the shootings, he posted a final self-pitying video to YouTube in which he explained his motives:

“For the last eight years of my life, ever since I hit puberty, I’ve been forced to endure an existence of loneliness, rejection and unfulfilled desires all because girls have never been attracted to me. Girls gave their affection, and sex and love to other men but never to me…

“You girls have never been attracted to me. I don’t know why you girls aren’t attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it. It’s an injustice, a crime, because… I don’t know what you don’t see in me. I’m the perfect guy and yet you throw yourselves at these obnoxious men instead of me, the supreme gentleman.

“I will punish all of you for it. (laughs) On the day of retribution I’m going to enter the hottest sorority house of UCSB. And I will slaughter every spoiled, stuck-up, blond slut I see inside there. All those girls I’ve desired so much, they would have all rejected me and looked down upon me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them (scoffs) while they throw themselves at these obnoxious brutes. I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you…”.

The sense of entitlement (“It’s an injustice, a crime, because… I don’t know what you don’t see in me…”) is the default incel mindset. They believe they have an absolute right to sexual satisfaction, which is being frustrated by the perverse choices of hot girls who never give them the time of day.

The incels wallow in misogyny and plan petty acts of revenge, such as posting pictures of male models on dating sites and meeting the girls who respond to abuse and frighten them (the film documements several of these real-life encounters). Some go even further, like Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old man who drove a van into pedestrians in Toronto, in Canada, in April 2018, killing 10 people. “The Incel Rebellion has already begun!” he announced on Facebook shortly before the attack.

Googling “incel community” returns almost four million results. This is no ephemeral online subculture that will run out of steam when the next internet fad comes along. Some incels are simply confused and frustrated young men with poor social skills who are more deserving of pity than censure. But others seem to be driven by an insane degree of pure hatred. It’s a very worrying phenomenon that may well account for much of the recent worldwide increase in online hostility towards women.

A record 170,000 England fans travelled to Germany for the cup and the majority were peaceful causing no problems.
But the worst rioting happened the day before the England vs Ecuador game.
Police believe rioters consumed or threw about 17 litres of beer each in Stuttgart and 400 England ‘fans’ were taken into preventative custody.
The motto of World Cup 2006 was ‘a time to make friends’ but undercover cameras reveal England ‘fans’ ‘mobbing up’ and singing songs about World War Two which visibly shock German police officers.
