We get to know the protagonists of the film in the last years before the outbreak of the war. Franka, Kwiryna, Bronka and Amelka graduated from primary school. Apart from Kwirina, they are all in a difficult financial situation, and yet they would like to continue their studies. It is not easy to get out of poverty in Nowolipki and the girls are aware of it. The first love experiences shape their characters differently, but all four are severely experienced through life. Bronka’s first love for the sensitive girl ends in a brutal rape, and then she ends up on the street. Bronka waits in vain for letters from Ignasio Pędzicki, whom she has sincerely loved, falls into apathy and is connected with Różycki, who is completely indifferent to her. Kwiryna’s parents are murdered, but she doesn’t break down, and decides to start living on her own. Amelka becomes pregnant with an official from Michałowski, who encourages her to get rid of the child. The treatment leaves permanent traces in her psyche.

The actresses, Maria Pakulnis and Adrianna Biedrzyńska, created a rare female duet in a Polish comedy (the scene in the phone booth reminds us of the classic “Lekarstwa na miłość” with Kalina Jędrusik and Krystyna Sienkiewicz). The sisters are their opposites: the pious, modest and athletic younger one and the emancipated, elegant and eloquent older one. “The Cobwebs” is the only thriller comedy in the oeuvre of Barbara Sass, a classic of women’s cinema in Poland, based on a screenplay by director and cinematographer Wieslaw Zdort. The idea for a film for a wide audience was born after the author came back from an American scholarship, in the period of the crisis of financing auteur cinema in Poland during the transformation. The WFiD production was co-financed by PZU, Polish Lottery Monopoly, British Airways, Puma and Kodak. Music for the film was composed by Rubik, and songs were performed by Edyta Górniak.

The protagonist, played with bravado by Dorota Stalinska, is an egotistical woman, striving for domination over her surroundings, ambitious and aggressive, though not devoid of sensitivity. However, the director does not stop at analysing the personality of her protagonist. She also touches upon the problem of manipulation of one artist by another. How far can you go here? What are the moral boundaries of such behaviour? Can art exist without playing with each other’s feelings and privacy? The provocative title of the film additionally emphasizes the importance of these questions. “Immoral Story” is an extremely honest, even intimate film. It is a story of a turbulent relationship between two women, a director and an actress. And the idea was taken by Barbara Sass from her own and Dorota Stalinska’s experiences. The “Immoral Story” contains some facts from the biographies of both of them.
