Based on the life of movie director Keisuke Kinoshita.

As a young man, Keisuke Kinoshita (Ryo Kase) carried his mother on a handcart across a mountain. He grew up as a hotblooded young man and was monitored by the military. He then joined Shochiku movie company, to eventually become a movie director.

Movie is made to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of director Keisuke Kinoshita’s birth (December 5, 1912 – December 30, 1998).
Filming begins November 9, 2012 and will take place in Shizuoka Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, & Gunma Prefecture. Filming will finish late November, 2012 and production will finish February, 2013.
Filming finished November 29, 2012 in Hamamatsu,Shizuoka Prefecture. The last scene filmed involved Keisuke (Ryo Kase), his mother (Yuko Tanaka) and delivery man (Gaku Hamada).

Following a deadly bus hijacking in southwest Japan, the three survivors–Makato (Koji Yakusho), the bus driver; Kozue (Aoi Miyazaki), a young girl; and Naoki (Masaru Miyazaki), her older brother–find further tragedy in their personal lives. When the traumatized Makato eventually contacts Kozue and Naoki two years later, he moves into their home and becomes a father figure for the two children, who have stopped speaking. The trio are then joined by Akihiko (Yohichiroh Saitoh), Kozue and Naoki’s college student cousin, and together this odd surrogate family embarks on a road trip across Japan. However, a string of murders appears to be following them and threatens to permanently disrupt their quest to regain normal lives.

Clocking in at more than three and a half hours, Shinji Aoyama’s EUREKA is a daunting film that rewards patient viewers with an utterly unique and moving cinematic experience. Shot in black and white with a sepia tone, the movie features breathtaking photography by Masaki Tamra. In part an ode to John Ford’s THE SEARCHERS, EUREKA features an outstanding performance by Yakusho in the John Wayne-like leading role.

On the same day of this word created from the depth of despair, the Christ passed away on the cross, A.D.2015, Virus has been spreading in many cities worldwide. It is a suicidal disease. The virus is infected by pictures. People, once infected, certainly come down with the disease, which leads to death. They have no way of fighting against the disease filled with fear and despair. The media calls the disease the Lemming Syndrome.

There is an old country house which is located between Japanese mountains and sea.
Young retired musicians, Mizui and Asuhara, live quietly surrounded with piles of music instruments. They are not quitting making music. They only abandoned their musician lives blessed with fame and talent in a city. They do not feel impatient. They continuously have driven themselves into their work. Their creation of sound flows with air. They have had a peaceful time.

An aged plutocrat, his granddaughter, and a detective came to the country where Mizui and Asuhara live, from a city with the virus spread over, pursuing the way to escape from the death caused by the disease. The granddaughter is desperate with the symptom of the disease. The detective caught the fact that in Mizui and Asuhara’s music, there are some secrets and important effects to prevent people from getting sick and dying of the Lemming Syndrome, even if they are infected with the virus. The aged man asked Mizui to play the music to save his granddaughter from the disease.

Mizui put enormous music instruments and started playing his music at the grassland in the quiet country as you can even hear the friction of leaves. Each of the sounds with long, low and high tone was mixed with each other, and rose up in the sky. The widely opened sky does not mute the sound, just swallow it.

Will the miracle happen when the human body touches the enormous lump of the sound?.

It’s a smart film that respects its audience, never overly explaining things or manipulating you. Shiota’s direction is humble and discreet. Use of music is in tone with the sober style of the film. There’s no score, and only two songs are played, both perfect for the moment. Acting is great! Just like her character in EUREKA Aoi Miyazaki speaks through body language and facial expressions, and delivers one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen from an actor her age. A perfect film.
