Quote:
Jacques Demy was arguably the greatest romantic of the French New Wave, and Lola was one film in which he proved how vital both sides of that equation were to his vision. While Lola exists within the same workaday France of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut’s early films, Raoul Coutard’s cinematography allows Demy to find a beauty and poetry in the most ordinary circumstances; Coutard’s moving camera brings the grace of a dancer to the film’s visual proceedings, no matter how shabby some of the characters’ circumstances may be. The narrative is so fluffy it threatens to blow away at any moment, but Demy primarily uses it as a device to focus on the emotional lives of his characters, and it is their common search for love that moves the story and keeps the film compelling. Demy’s casting is nothing short of superb: Anouk Aimée is joyously radiant in the title role, and her every word and movement convey such a seductive charm that it’s no wonder three men are vying for her hand; Marc Michel, Alan Scott, and Jacques Harden all resister in their own way as Lola’s suitors; and Annie Duperoux is spot-on as Lola’s teenage counterpart. Lola is a film whose goal is obviously to touch the heart rather than the mind, but Demy tells his simple story with such a rare blend of passion and intelligence that he’s able to please the intellect as well. The result remains one of the most purely pleasurable products of the French Nouvelle Vague.

Another case rather isolated in the background of Italian cinema during 60s is Paolo Spinola, who made the best debut as a director in 1964: “La fuga”, a movie which Spinola shot aged 35 after a long activity as assistant director and scriptwriter. It’s the first Italian movie explicitly and fully based on a psychoanalytic plot. “La fuga” (which is also the best script written by Sergio Amidei during 60s and the best acting performance by Giovanna Ralli, who won the Nastro d’Argento prize as the best leading actress of that year thanks to this movie) suggests an attentive and meticulous investigation of a neurosis suffered by Piera, a typical woman from the Italian affluent society, wife of a successful engineer and living a ménage seemingly with no worries. The movie, partially following the external symptomatology of neurosis, partially recalling its symbolic expressions and its removed causes on a psychoanalyst’s couch, constructs piece by piece the itinerary of an existential unease which will end up dramatically, in spite of the psychoanalytic cure. The movie depicts actually an existential unease because, although the serious scientific apparatus of the movie is intended to draw the clinical picture in the traditional analytic terms, it seems to be closer to “The divided Self” by Laig than to the Freudian orthodoxy. But far from being a fault, this is surely the greatest quality of this work, along with the wordly-wise narration excellently built up around an extraordinary story and uncommon characters.

In his landmark 1948 essay Birth of a New Avant-Garde, filmmaker Alexandre Astruc advanced the notion of le caméra-stylo (camera pen) which imagined the cinema eventually breaking free of the concrete demands of narrative, where images become a means of writing just as flexible and subtle as written language. Greatly influenced by Astruc’s theory, it was only a few years later that in 1954 Francois Truffaut spoke of the director as an auteur, the cinematic equivalent of a novelist, cap able of expressing themselves through recurring thematic elements, distinctive ways of building characters, and, above all, through the deployment and movement of actors and objects within the time and space of the shot.

The immense popularity of the auteurist cinema of such legendary directors as John Ford, Orson Welles, Howard Hawks and Alfred Hitchcock eventually saw film surpass the novel as the dominant narrative form of our time. As a result, major literary figures – novelists, playwrights, poets soon began to venture into the medium in search of new and unfamiliar ways of seeing and interpreting. This series offers up
a survey of some of the more notable films directed by contemporary writers. Deeply poetic and surprisingly assured, these films challenge the limits of expected narrative structure as well as our assumptions of conventional realism. Their brilliant visual associations offer a fascinating parallel to the literary work of their respective directors and vividly remind us of Astruc’s idea of film as a language independent altogether of literature.
