Synopsis:
A writer meets five widows on a train to Puri, one of them played by Sharmila Tagore. As the six lives begin to intertwine, the taboos of widowhood emerge; but so, too, does a philosophy of life and hope for the future. The performers collectively won Best Actress at India’s National Film Awards in 1964. Director Tapan Sinha creates another great film of novelistic complexity.

This movie is way ahead of it’s time in depicting society’s attitudes towards widows in India, who were confined to their homes and could never re-marry.

This movie is an adaptation of the novel with the same name by eminent Bengali
writer Samaresh Basu, who wrote this travelogue under his pen name ‘Kalkut’.

Satyajit Ray was not only one of the biggest admirers of Tagore but he was also one of the few who understood and interpreted Tagore’s works with his own unique vision. Ray with his neorealistic style of filmmaking found a perfect ally in Tagore’s stories of ordinary folks. “Teen Kanya”, based on three stories by Tagore –The Postmaster, Monihara and Samapti– was meant to be a tribute to the poet laureate by Ray, made as it was in the author’s birth centenary in 1961. The film however becomes a perfect symbiosis of a master writer and filmmaker.
The Postmaster is the tender story of a city bred postmaster who, in a provincial town, teaches a young girl to read and write. Monihara is a story woven around the obsession of a woman towards her jewels, while Samapti is the story of a tomboyish girl who realizes the love for her husband after a forced marriage. Incidentally all the three stories have also been made into individual films.

Nita (Supriya Choudhury), breaks a sandal while passing through the market square, and without complaining, continues barefoot on the graveled street, unable to buy a replacement pair of sandals for the walk home. Patently aware that Nita has received her monthly salary, her talented, but indolent older brother Shankar (Anil Chatterjee) pays an unexpected visit, and encountering Nita absorbed in reading a personal letter from a suitor named Sanat (Niranjan Ray), playfully snatches the note and reads aloud its affectionate contents, before asking her for spending money. Meanwhile her younger sister, Gita (Gita Ghatak) and brother Mantu (Dwiju Bhawal) brazenly plead with their desperate and resourceless mother (Gita De) for new articles of clothing, before re-directing their vain and selfish entreaties to Nita. Having spent her entire salary on her burdensome, coddled siblings, her embittered and insecure mother then vociferously complains to her father (Bijon Bhattacharya), an underemployed school teacher, that Nita has squandered the monthly household budget. Bound by a selfless sense of familial duty, Nita has decided to postpone her marriage to Sanat until Shankar realizes his ambition to become a classical singer. However, as Nita perseveres in her sacrifice for her ungrateful and demanding family, her own prospects for happiness proves ever increasingly bleak.
