Plot Outline: No artist in the second half of the 20th century was more famous – or, perhaps, more famously misunderstood – than Andy Warhol. This two-part film, directed by Ric Burns, explores Warhol’s astonishing artistic output – from the late 1940s to his untimely death in 1987 – paintings, drawings and photographs, films and television, books, magazines and musical performances. Set within the turbulent, changing context of his life and times, this portrait is the first to move deeply into the immense archives at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the city of his humble origins. Obsessed with fame and a desire to transcend those origins, Warhol uniquely grasped the realities of modern society – the function of celebrity and of the mass media – and became the high priest of one of the most radical experiments in American culture, permanently penetrating and redefining the barrier between art and commerce.

In April of 1966, the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York opened an exhibit by the true Jay Gatsby of American art, Andy Warhol. Silver Clouds, as it was called, consisted in its entirety of a roomful of silver, metalized plastic pillow-shaped balloons inflated with helium and oxygen. They floated … that’s all they did … held aloft by the gallery’s own air vents. In comparison to Warhol’s yellow and pink Cow wallpaper exhibit then-ongoing in another part of the gallery, this was a dynamic work, but it was not without its charm for some.

Willard Maas, the poet, filmmaker and off-camera star of Warhol’s 1964 film Blow Job, was so taken by the installation that he decided to put these inflated bags of air on film (perhaps, who can say, sensing a theme in light of his fellatory participation in the earlier work). The result, ‘Andy Warhol’s Silver Flotations’ was his enduring contribution to the Warholian ether all New York seemed to be floating in in those days, and it is our offering today.’

On October 9th, 1972 an exhibition of John Lennon/Yoko Ono’s art, designed by the Master of the Fluxus movement, George Maciunas, opened at the Syracuse Museum of Art, in New York. On the same day an unusual group of John’s and Yoko’s friends, including Ringo, Allen Ginsberg, Paul Krasner, and many others, gathered to celebrate John’s birthday. This film is a visual and audio record of that event.

Plot Summary:
Joe Spencer, a member of a motorcycle gang, is taking a shower. After his bout with personal hygiene, Joe encounters Andy Warhol’s “superstars,” who engage him in conversation. The superstars crack jokes he doesn’t understand and continually correct his poor pronunciation in an attempt to deflate his machismo. In response to these provocations, Joe becomes more obscene and more boasting, but ultimately, he cannot compete with the put-downs that are part of the put-on performances of the Warhol superstars, who prevail over him in the end. Imdb User Comment:First he’s seen as meat on a stick, a himbo lathering up in a shower that’s punctuated by pip-pip-pop strobe edits shoving bits of his lummoxy body in our face. Then this guy, a guido-y wannabe biker dude, seems like more of an unconscious-hustler type (like the young dude in MY HUSTLER), gets turned loose on the Factory gang. First he becomes less than a pornographic object of desire: his meanness, his homophobic bullying, his self-satisfaction with his own unapparent cleverness all make him distasteful–the rough trade Andy brought to the party who then spoiled it for everyone. Then we get to know him better, hear him talk in depth about himself–and it’s wan stuff about his job history. He comes to seem like a hurtin’, hurt-dealin’, profoundly unreflective guy–someone, to put it delicately, without a lot of resources. But then there are these amazing moments when the Warhol crew is struck dumb by him–either by his crude hostility or by his near-mute, cowlike perceptions that bowl them over in their childish truthfulness. And these druggy sophisticates come to seem suddenly, crashingly vulnerable too. It would be easy to hand all the credit to Paul Morrissey here; his influence is obvious (though the movie is a superior version of later, Morrissey-credited pictures like TRASH and HEAT). But in its biggest, abstractest shapes–the war-dance between looks without brains and brains without looks–it’s quintessentially Warholian.
